Not that it helps much at this stage on the orignal question, but this looks to be the transcript entry for 1851 for the family:

John Kinnen 28, Excavator b. Ireland
Margaret Kinnen 30 b. Ireland
Serresy Kinnen 6 b. Ireland
John Finnen 4
Edward Finnen 2
William Finnen 6 Months

Address: 33 St Mary's Wynd, Edinburgh

That's a shame. I wonder if Serresy is an Irish name slightly misinterpreted and written as it was spoken  ;)

I've had a good look at the whole page and it's definitely Serresy - all the letters match others on the page.

Hi, I wonder if it is 'Sarah C' and this was the way the enumerator wrote it on the census.

I've just checked the Roman Catholic baptisms on SP in the hope that 'Serresy' may just have been baptised when the family came over to Edinburgh but no joy  :-\ Her two brothers do show there though:

John, born 11/02/1846 and baptised 15/03/1846 - at EDINBURGH, ST JOHN'S PORTOBELLO
Edward James, b. 01/06/1848   and baptsied 08/06/1848 - at EDINBURGH, ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL

Monica

Added: Missed out one more: Margaret born 16/01/1854 and baptised 01/02/1854 at EDINBURGH, ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL

That sounds very logical.  ;)

Hmmm, I don't buy that.  In most cases the enumerator would be copying from the householder's form, not writing down what he was told verbally.  But even if it was the latter, surely the person giving the names would say 'Sarah' or 'Sarah Charlotte' (for example) rather than 'Sarah C'.

Just wondering if it is really Sarracy but misspelled.

There's a link to the Irish surname here:
