census, birth, death - Jessie & Marian HAMILTON (of Illabo)
« on: Monday 08 March 10 07:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
Ive been really encouraged by my recent postings on rChat that I've decided to ask about a person who continues to allude me on my own family tree.

My g g grandmother was Jessie Hamilton.  I have her marriage certificate which includes the following:
•   issued 14 April 1897
•   in Illabo, near Cootamundra.
•   Mrd  to  Arthur Claydon Boxsell.
•   At 21 years old - making her birth circa 1876.
•   her father ‘ unknown’ and her mother Marian Hamilton.
•   Jane Hamilton is a witness.

I know that Arthur and Jessie had children - including my g grandmother Daisy in 1901.

I'm looking to find out anything about my Hamilton ancestry.  I cant find Jessie’s birth record, and her mother Marian - there is not a single record to document birth or death (that I can find).

I know that Arthur died in Chatswood in 1952, and there is an entry for a ‘Jessie Boxsell (there arnt many!) who died in St Leonard’s in 1964 – but her parents names (Matthew and Margaret) are completely  different to her marriage cert.  Is it my Jessie but the informant was very wrong?

I also believe that Jessie and Marian are from a Hamilton family that had been at Illabo for some time.  I’m very interested in their experiences on the land out there but have no keys to find out at the moment.  Does anyone have access to any census records or electoral rolls for that area then?

Many thanks to anyone that might be able to provide any new information - Alli

I wonder if the mother's name could be Marion or Mary Ann?  If you think she is illegitimate there is a possibility that her birth was not registered.  Perhaps her mother was not born in Ausrtalia.

Was there another witness on the marriage cert?

Who was the informant on Jessie's death certificate?

There was another witness to the marriage - a W J Boxsell (of the Grooms party).

I dont have her death certificate - I am working off her online registration atm.  I was reluctant to get it with the uncertainty regarding her parents...

Possibility -

Born to James and Marion E Hamilton, Sydney
Jane E 1873
Marion C 1878

Jane E Hamilton m. John T Wilcox 1913 Condobolin

Death of Marion E Hamilton 1922 New Lambton

Arthur C Boxsell would seem to be from family of dairy farmers on the south coast - Berry, Meroo.

Errol was a Gallopoli ANZAC in 1915 at age 16 1/2 yrs, father Arthur also enlisted

I wonder if mother Marian married after the birth of Jessie -

3396/1879
WALKER Wilbain James
HAMILTON Marian
District Cootamundra

and this death but she would certainly be a fair age :-\ :-\  However it is the right Marian, perhaps it was her mother Jane HAMILTON who witnessed the marriage.

19643/1957
WALKER  Marian
Father William  Mother Jane
District Hurstville

Nice information!

I had found Erroll and the other Boxsell kids - actually there is a great photograph of Erroll in the NLA Newspaper catalogue upon his return from honoured service in the Dardanelles.

I had thought that perhapes, because she was illigitimate, Jessie's birth may not have been registered.  Especially if she was born out in western NSW in that day - definately the 'frontier'.

The James and Marion E Hamilton marriage and children looks promising...  but why was James not on Jessie marriage certificate?  It would explain who Jane was though.

And I had seen a Marion death in New Lambton - its a long way from where I was thinking she might be.  I wonder if she appears in any censuses?

the Hamilton/Walker marriage might very well be possible too - especially being out at Cootamunda.

There's so many possibilities.  Does Jessie and Marian ever appear at the same address?  Were censuses conducted back then?

NLA digitised newspapers has the death notice (SMH 17 July 1952) for Arthur Claydon BOXSELL, husband of Jessie, father of Errol, Daisy, Lovell and Noel.  Died at RGH Concord July 13.  Private cremation.
