Help me please!!
« on: Monday 08 March 10 08:21 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me find James Masson. I know almost nothing about him. He had a son James who died abt.1875. On James (Jnr) death cert, parents are James and Helen m/s Caird I think James (snr & jnr) may have been born in Kardineshire. Can anybody give me any hints, tips, tricks, anything that may help me find this elusive fellow?

Hi Marg

Sorry, lots of questions now!

What do you have on James Jnr.? Estimated birth year, who did he marry, children etc. What was his occupation? Have you got him on censuses before his death?

On James Snr., what his occupation on his son's death cert? Did he and wife Helen show as deceaased when their son died?

Monica  :)

Thanks for taking the time to answer me Monica. James jnr was born abt 1810. 1871 census: age 61. Labourer in granite works, born Forden Kincardineshire (Peterhead census) Wife Barbara born Longside, children Thomas 23 b. Longside Andrew 19 b Longside William 22 b Glenbervie Kinkardinshire. James married Barbara Taylor in Longside. James snr occupation on sons d.c. is "farm .........". Helen Masson is not given as dec, although as James jnr was 70 yrs old it is most likely she was.
 Once again thanks
                              Marg.

Hi Marg

Failing miserably to see anything on parents James and Helen  :-\

What children they had do not show on the Old Parish Registers which makes it hard to track potential siblings for James Jnr.

The only thing I could see in the 1841 census and it is pure speculation is this entry:

James Masson 65, crofter
Helen Masson 45
James Masson 9
Mary Walker 9

Address: Crynoch, Maryculter

Ages for the 1841 census were rounded down the nearest 5 years. Don't know whether the Helen above was daughter or wife (relationships not shown in the 1841 census). As I said though, pure guess as there is nothing more to link it with at this stage  :-\

Hi  :)

I have some details for the death of an Isabella Masson, born 1841 died 1896. Widow of Robert. Her parents were Alexander Christie and Helen Main

Baptism of Margaret Masson in 1806 in Cookney, father George.

Both of these events happened in Cookney, Fetteresso parish

Are these yours?

AND...

1806 Baptism of Margaret Masson, daugh of George.  (witnesses John Masson, James Masson)

1806 Baptism of Christian, daugh of William (witnesses - Ann Gerard and Christian Duthie)

Just so happens these were on the same pages as my lot.

Thank you so much Monica and Tracey. James (snr) is proving very hard to track down. Would Helen have been "Caird " on her death cert? Also the name could have been spelt "Mason" in James snr's day. I don't know what to do next. Someone might find him and Helen on their tree some day I might get lucky!!!!!!!!!!!  :( :( :(
   Once again THANKS

According to somebody at Ancestry this is James in 1841 at Nether Tulloch Farm, Garvock, Kincardine.

John Masson     65 Farmer
Helen Masson    60
James Masson 30
David Lagre    3
Eliza McKenzie 20
Kath Blacklaws 25
Ann Malcolm    15

You can see the details at FREECEN.

They give his parents names as John Masson and Helen Christie who did have a James in 1809.

I see that while he was living at Kincardine (if it's him) with his parents Barbara was with her parents and their first child at Longside.

Regards,
Nel

Later.......................I think I see that James (son of John and Helen Christie) at Benholm in later census records so It looks like the person at Ancestry has their info wrong although their interest seems to be James who married Barbara Taylor.
