Anyone recognise this place?
« on: Monday 08 March 10 20:12 GMT (UK) »
This is a VERY long shot. I wonder if any reader recognises this place. This is a copy of a treasured picture in the possession of my Australian relatives. The family arrived in Australia in 1850 - it is possible that this picture offers a clue as to their origins
APOLOGIES - the file is too large for inclusion. I'm travelling at the moment and don't have the means to shrink the picture.

Could you email it to someone you know could reduce it for you, and get them to post it on here, or email the smaller one back to you, so you can post it ?

Thanks for the suggestion - I've just sent it off to someone who may be able to help. If not, it will keep until I'm home among all my toys

Here is the mystery picture - if anyone thinks they know this scene (probably drawn pre-1850) I would be really grateful for suggestions

There is a possiblity that it is on the Shropshire, Herefordshire borders. The hill in the background also looks remarkably like Clee Hill.

Any names to work with?

I agree that the hilly background might narrow the search area somewhat. I know little about the family's origins: the parents of the original 1850 settlers in Australia appear in the 1841 census living in (though not born in) Middlesex. The father was still alive in 1851, when he gave his birthplace as Charlwood Surrey (though he is not found in the parish register there).
Thanks for your comments IAN

The half-timbered building says north Herefordshire too ...

I know what you mean about the Herefordshire landscape and houses. However, in view of the fact that Charlwood, Surrey was named as the Australian settlers' father's birthplace, might this not be a picture of the Surrey Hills, or the Downs?

I associate Shropshire with more ornate timber work

Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.
