1911 Census & children who've died
« on: Tuesday 09 March 10 07:31 GMT (UK) »
For a number of my ancestors families the 1911 census is showing more children than I thought existed because it reveals how many have died.

Will there be birth and death records for all these children?

Would a stillborn child have been given a birth certificate & have been recorded as a child that died or would these all be children who'd survived at least a short while?

At the time of the 1911 census stillbirths would not have been registered (there's a thread about this at the moment and I think stillbirth register didn't come into existence until 1927 or so).
For a birth certificate to be issued the child has to have been born alive. Sometimes a child that only lived a short while was registered without a first name and will appear in birth/death register index just as male/female.
Often difficult to say if people filled out that part of census correctly.
In 1911 census a relative is listed as having 8 children/6 living. However, I know from certificates, newspaper obituaries and cemetery records that she had given birth to 12 children but only 8 of them had been given first names. Of the 6 dead children- they died 12 months, 16 hours, 1 week, 4 months and 2 stillborn. Therefore only 2 out 4 infants were counted (probably the ones died at 1 year and 4 months- and they are the ones that were registered with first names).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
