This info is fantastic I have really been struggling on this side of my family! Alice Murial was my great grandmother! If anyone has any more info it would be fantastic. It is helping me understand where my family come from!

Kind regards to all

If you obtain the Marriage Papers for the 1905 marriage in the Staines District shown here, you will also be able to trace Alice's mother Alice back.

Use the Reference info shown to fill in the blanks on the GRO Order Form (currently £7.00 online, soon to be £9.25) - just specify the Grooms details given theres a query over the Brides spelling.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

 :)

working back from Alice birth in 1908,

Births Jun 1908

Startup  Alice Muriel A    Nottingham  7b 480

this seems to be her parents marriage?

Marriages Mar 1905

STARTUP  Francis Cecil H    Staines  VOLUME 3a Page 26
AND
WICHENS  Alice     Staines  3a 26

OR alternate spelling

WICKENS  Alice     Staines  3a 26

You will have to get the Marriage Papers to ID Alice by her Father's name back in the 1881/91/01 census.

they moved around a bit - did they settle in Kent later?

still in Nottingham 3 years after Alice Muriel's birth. Francis' Mother Ann (see later info) is there and another child Charles Cecil, born c1907.

Fran* Cecil Hill Startup seems to be in Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire

You could use 'Pay to View' on the 1911 census to establish more details.

My great grandmother Alice Startup married my great grandfather Herbert Leslie Thompson in Sheffield in 1929. They then had my grandfather in Sheffield. From what I know they settled in Sheffield and my grandfather then moved to Hartlepool in Co.Durham.

As for the rest of the Startup family I believe they stayed in the London and Kent area.

I was referring to her mother Alice Wickens - who I could not positively ID on the 1901 census.

Sorry! I believe from a small piece of information my father has gave me that she was born in George Street in London.

That looks like the place as it's near Hanover Square.

Births Jun 1875

Wickens  Alice     St. Geo. H. Sq.  1a 331

matches age on 1911 census.

still cant find her though. Perhaps mother remarried and she's under a stepfathers name?
