Cornwall County Gaol & House of Correction
« on: Tuesday 09 March 10 19:01 GMT (UK) »
Would be very grateful to anyone who can help me. I have just discovered a relative William Francis Pollard on 1841 census who is in the Cornwall County Gaol. Does anyone know how I can find out how he came to be there. I am a long way from Cornwall so a trip to the records office is not possible at this time.  :)

thanks Carole for all your hard work. I have seen that entry on IGI but although the date is right for my William Francis his father according to his marriage cert was a Cabinet maker, but the William pollard married to Mary from Menheniot is a Farmer. Can't seem to find any William Pollards who were cabinet makers to fit the bill though, ???

Could be worthwhile getting that christening entry checked for William's occupation

In1841 - your William Francis was in Bodmin gaol so as he was not with parents it is difficult to make the right connection.

However  the 1851 shows him b Falmouth and he is the only William Francis Pollard shown on either the 1841 or 1851 censuses

There are only 3 William Francis Pollard marriages on freebmd - your William's  in 1846 Penzance and then nothing until 1871 in London  and 1890 Penzance

Sorry Carole to keep bothering you but haven't sent for birth records before. Is that likely to give me father's occupation in 1826? Also if father had died before William Francis married in 1846 would that have been recorded on marriage certificate?
