Templetons of Ary Wool Mill location?
« on: Thursday 11 March 10 20:37 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to track down an old wool company called "Templetons" based in Ayr (James Templeton & Sons Ltd). I am looking for their Mill or HQ in Ayr but don't know the place very well, if anybody know where it is or was (as often is the case with buildings of old) then please could they show me on a Google Map.

Hi lasto,

There was a large Mill, demolished c1980's, on Mill Street, (closer to Smith Street), in Ayr. The site is now occupied by a car park serving Debenham's etc. Have you tried the Carnegie Library in Ayr or Ayrshire Archives, they may be able to help further?

Best wishes, Jimmijam
My email address is not working sorry.

Sorry for the initial posting above.  :-\ I had looked at this topic and then another one and then managed to post on this one what I intended to say on the other thread...which made no sense at all here....so I quickly erased it!!! ! ???

Long story short......finally I've had time to finish the follow up google searching on this topic and I there is a link to a map of the location that was reduced to a car park that JimmiJam describes above found on the Ayrshire Council website.  See here:  http://gis.south-ayrshire.gov.uk/mapsSimple/mapBuildingStandards.asp?Extent=233922,621536,234122,621736

Hope this is helpful for you.

Best wishes
Jean

Thanks for the info guys, I am awaiting a reply from the South Ayr Library and was directed there from the Council. It could very well be the car park as you point out, many of the Mills have been developed over, but I need to know your sources to corroborate the location. I am not too good at using the too on that page and looking at the reference link they don't seem to specifically point out what the original plot was used for.

I am now going to contact the Archives people and see, with this information, what I can see.

Thanks guys!

Yea I got the info from the page posted above, thanks for the confirmations though! It wasn't that long ago and so people know of relatives that worked in the industry, how times change, fast.

The mill was in Charlotte Street/Fort Street and moved the Mill Street after a fire but can not remember what year that was.

In 1876 the mill employed 170 male weavers and over 200 women and girls
preparing wool in four tall buildings on the corner of Fort Street and
Cahrlotte Street. On 16 June that year, a fire broke out about eleven in
the morning and within two hours the entire complex was gutted. Twenty nine
people died, trapped in the blazing interior - 28 girls aged 13 - 21 and
their foreman. A new mill was built in 1878 off Kyle Street.
