Robert Ochterlony Chalmers is named at Rootsweb. World Connect but apart from naming the parents and his death date, does not appear to have any further information. I see a Robert listed on the 1851 Scotland Census in Montrose with parents William and Mary, his occupation is "sailor". It could well be that he travelled over to the USA as part of a ships crew so no listing of him would show on the passenger lists.

Sorry we could'nt be more helpful.  A Robert Chalmers born 1828 Scotland was named on a 1850 Census Record for New York but obviously did'nt belong to you.

Hope you come back if you have any more US queries.  Good Luck with the rest of your research.  ;D

The Robert arriving in 1844 travelled with this family:
CHALMERS
George, 30, carpet weaver,b Scotland
Mrs Mary, 30
Robert, 17
Margret, 13
Ann, 11
James, 2

This family is found (without Robert) on 1850 US census in Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut

George 45, carpet weaver, b Scotland
Mary, 42, b Scotland
Ann, 16, b Scotland
James, 9, b Scotland
Mary, 6, b Connecticut
William, 1, b Connecticut

Not sure if this is a help or a hindrance... :D

I don't see the family in 1860 (with that spelling).  Perhaps they returned to Scotland?

Also sailing on the above voyage that the others mentioned, were the following Chalmers (country to which they belong: Scotland):
James, age 40, Carpet Weaver
Margaret, age 40
Barbara (inft), age 9 months
Mary Ann, age 19
Hugh, age 17
John, age 14
James, age 12
Margaret, age 10?
Elizabeth, age 6

There were only three pages of names for this voyage.  Listed above James Chalmers and his family were Joseph Scott and his family.  Joseph was a carpet weaver.  Listed under George Chalmers and his family were Adam Brown and his family.  Adam was also a carpet weaver.  There were others sailing, who didn't have this occupation.  I'm noting the occupation, in case it helps in any way.
---------
Found on the site listed below are James and Margaret Chalmers.  They have different headstones but it does mention they were husband and wife; their ages are a bit off from the above James and Margaret.  They were buried in Grove Cemetery as was a Helen Chalmers Douglass.
