William OXENHAM/John Oxenham
« on: Monday 15 March 10 20:55 GMT (UK) »
hi all
i wonder if anyone has any info on a William Oxenham possibly born about 1823 definitely in devon and possibly Tiverton.
This William died in Exeter and was renowned for having won the Victoria Cross in the famous Indian Mutiny.

I am following the Oxenham family and would really like to see if I can fit him into the tree somewhere. Any help on births and parentage etc. would be great.

If you know about his death then start there and go back a step at a time - Did he leave a widow?
If so, when did they marry? and who was his dad on his marriage cert?
Can you pinpoint him on any censuses? (again wifes name will help) and if so where does he say he was born?

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Wow.

I have found it now thankyou so much. It's amazing how long you can use a resource and yet stop looking in the most obvious places. That's brilliant. Thanks for your help. :)

Dan1611,
What a coincidence. I posted info about William Oxenham and his wife Hannah on a site devoted to the name Oxenham 3 days ago and received a response about William and his VC with an offer of more details if required. Oxenham (my wife's surname) is one of the names I am researching.
Send me a PM if you are interested in more info. Most of my stuff relates to the Welsh branch but the roots are in Oakford/Bampton Devon 1786 and before.

Further to this earlier request for help. I have found William's father as given above. I have found William and family in 1841 with wife and daughter although I haven't found them in 1851. His father outlived William living into his nineties.
I now need to see if I can get a marriage for John and Charlotte. John was born in Tiverton. Now Charlotte is down as having been born in Tiverton in 1851 census but in 1861 it appears that this differs but it's very difficult to see what it says. Not having a thorough knowledge of Devon I can't hazard a guess.
The first child was born c 1819 so a marriage from 1815-18 would be a guess.
Anyway as always any help is great.

According to the FREECEN transcription, Charlotte was born in Exeter. FREECEN also gives their ages as 90 (John) and 95 for Charlotte. On looking at the actual census I'm inclined to agree with FREECEN's transcription on all counts. This suggests to me that John & Charlotte could have been married as early as 1795, so don't rule that out as a possibility. Any children born 1790-1819 may have left home by the 1841 census. HOWEVER, I am suspicious of these ages - if Charlotte was indeed William OXENHAM's mother, she would have been 57 when she gave birth to him, and 59 when she gave birth to Ephraim. It is possible that the ages in 1861 should read 70 and 75 - which tally with those shown in 1851 of 62 and 65.
The Devon FHS can supply an index of all OXENHAM marriages in Devon 1754-1837. They also can supply baptisms 1813-1839. Go to http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/indexes.htm for details.
