Maurice MEADE, 1893-1972, Limerick Flying Column
« on: Sunday 21 March 10 17:18 GMT (UK) »
I am researching Maurice Meade

1.born in Ballinavanna, Elton, Co. Limerick on 11 May 1893.

2. died on 19 April 1972, and is interred in Emly cemetery

3. Private 10271 in Royal Irish Regiment (I have his MIC). He joined about 1911, was captured early in the war, and joined Casements Irish Brigade, hence my interest,

4. On release he appears to have joined the IRA taking part in a number of ambushes, including the execution of 3 men.

Can anybody help me with any further information. The stuff I have is here

I understand that a local historian Tom Toomey has done research on the Dromkeen Ambush and other events at this time

If anyone knows how to contact him, can they PM me. I cannot find a contact email on Google

Never heard back from Linda Meade above, so I guess she never got anything from her father, on their great uncle.

Also a book of  Meade's memoirs was published ("Maurice Meade, A Forgotten Freedom Fighter". Paddy Buckley. Tipperary. 2003. Paperback. First Edition. 47pp. Illus. B/W photographs.) But I cannot find a copy for sale today - Kennys Bookshop had one on their catalogue, but no longer there. Any suggestions

Maurice Meade is my Step Grandfather. He was married to my Grandmother - Hanora (Nora) Hayes of Emly. There were no children from that marriage. Paddy Buckley is my second cousin and I think I may be able to get a copy of the booklet you refer to.

Grandad, as we called him, wrote a recollection of his life, which I confess I haven't read for quite some time. It is in a very fragile state having been typed on rather thin paper. I am hoping to transcribe it into Word in the near future.

I live in the U.S. and will be in Emly at the end of September. I will be very happy to help you in any way I can.

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

If you have anything on his time in the Irish Brigade, that you could let me have to add to my account, I would be very grateful. I am starting to discover that most of the men did write accounts, but very few things were actually published.

Also if you can put me on to where I might be able to buy a copy of that book by your second cousin, or if you know of any Dublin library that might have a copy.

And so that I get my facts right, do you know when he married Nora Hayes. And was that his only marriage (you say he was your step grandfather, so I got a bit lost!)

His marriage to Nora Hayes was his only marriage. Nora's first husband's name was John Holloway, so I guess he married a Holloway not a Hayes as I said in my previous posting. I don't know when they were married but I can certainly find out.

I'm not sure if the NLI in Dublin has a copy of Paddy Buckley's book. I can find out if Paddy still has some available.

I will read Grandad's book again and get you more information. I will be in Emly in about two weeks.

Thanks

I found the marriage - it is Oct/Dec 1922 and she is down as Nora Holloway.

He did a witness statement to Bureau of Military History, which I am getting information on at the  moment,

The other thing you can get if you want more on him is his Irish Army file/pension record. If you want to go down that route, if you post here, others more knowledgeable than I will tell you how to do that.
