From Russia with love?
« on: Monday 22 March 10 12:28 GMT (UK) »
Looking for evidence of family who were in England 1901.Name varies from Grivitski to Grevitsky and other variations of the name. Only thing certain is that Max and Kate came to Liverpool from Russia before 1898.1901 family is Grevitsky living in Edge Hill St.Stephen in West Derby and Max is a Cabinet maker; Annie 1898,Jacob 1899 and Philip 1900 all born Liverpool.1911 family has grown by Barnet,Harold and Morris.

Where do I look to find when Max and Kate came to these shores and possibly where from?
All help appreciated.
Josie.

Have you checked freebmd to see if they married in England  I can see a Max Grovitsky to Kate Black in 1896

A copy of their marriage cert could give you more info

The marriage was a Jewish one and is on Lancsbmd - www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

Did look at this but as Kate is born Russia according to the census I have looked at I didn't think Black was a very Russian name.
Will look further but Max would have arrived sometime with or without his missus.

Why not get a copy of one of their childrens birth certs to confirm Kate's maiden name if you are dubious about the marriage

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/
 - does show a naturalisation record for Grivitski, Max, from Russia, living in Liverpool (in 1919).  It would be worth getting copies of the original documents (may indeed show a location in Russia for them).

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/31632/pages/13558  - here is a mention of the naturalisation, showing this man was also a cabinet maker and served in WWI.
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/ (shows Grivitski, Max served in the labour corps)

Barnet seems to have changed his name:

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/35775/pages/4851
http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/35358/pages/6814

As did Harold:
http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/34820/pages/1884

The mention of the surname "Krevitsky" in Barnet's records may be because that is how his surname was spelt on his birth record.

If the marriage that Carole found isn't theirs then it's an amazing coincidence that there are two lots of people with the same names in the right area marrying about the right time.  :-\

Neither Kate or Max (as they stand) are Russian names - they are either shortened or anglicised. There's a chance the same happened with the surname Black, or perhaps the census is incorrect about Kate's place of birth. Do both the 1901 and 1911 say Kate was born in Russia?

Does indeed.Both Russian.
Like the idea of birth certificate though.Do know some of them changed their surnames.

Even more complicated as there was a Kate Black who was Russian and living in West Derby with her cousin George Tieman in 1901. However I cannot see her being in 2 places at once. i.e. with hubby Max and with her cousin.

Hi Josie

Page 2 of Max's service records dated 19/4/1918 has next of kin as Kate Black Grivitsky, living at 19 Sherdley St, Liverpool.  Wife's maiden name Black.  Married 13th August 1896 in Liverpool.  Children: Barnet (7/10/1902), Harold (21/11/1905) and Mauriel (21/1/1907), all registered Liverpool, West Derby.

Presumably the older children had left home by then.

So it looks as though the marriage found by CaroleW is the right one.  :)

Kind regards
