Edward Mayhew - Surgeon - Hitchen
« on: Saturday 27 March 10 08:27 GMT (UK) »
Edward Mayhew, Surgeon, was born in London in 1828, his son  Edward William was born in Hitchen in 1855. Is it possible to find out if Edward the elder practised surgery in Hitchen, or was the family just passing through the town when Edward, Jr was born? Thank you for your time. Margaret.

I was looking for the family in 1861 and all I found was this -

Rg9 254 23 49
Morpeth Rd, Bethnal Green
J Pendlebury 59 late of the mint superannuated bn London
Ann Pendlebury 60 bn London
Edward Pendlebury 20 son bn London
Ann Mayhew dtr married 29 bn London
Emma Pendlebury 16 dtr bn London
Edward Mayhew grandson 6 bn Hertfordshire

so it looks as if Edwrd junior and his mum are visiting or living with her parents.

I'll look again for Edwrd senior.

Thanks for your interest, lizdb. I have the family in 1861 in London but by that time Edward Sr had gone to Chile and never returned. I was hoping to find out if he was employed as a surgeon in Hitchen or if the family just happened to be staying there when Edward William was born. Edward Jr came out to Australia in 1876, leaving mother Anne with her Pendlebury family. Regards, Margaret.

Hi Lizdb,
The address of Edward Sr and wife Annie was given as Homerton - no street Address. They both were born in London and families lived there as well. Have looked through 1861 and 1851 census records(looking for a doctors surgery)and cannot find Bancroft street where Edward Jr was born, although it does get a mention through Google. I think that Annie must have been visiting Hitchen when the baby was born. Thanks for your time. Regards, Margaret.

Hello Margaret,
Not sure if this will be any help but Hitchin  is spelt with a i not an e, also Bancroft is just Bancroft with no street after it. It is located between Fishponds Rd, Nightingale Rd & Bedford Rd. Hope this may help in some way.

Thanks missmilly re spelling of Hitchin. However, with regard to Bancroft - there once was a street named Bancroft Street for that is how it is stated on bc of Edward's son.

Hi

Edward Mayhew does not appear on the 1855 PO Directory for HertsEssexKent as a surgeon(or anything else).

Ray

ps Hitchin is spelt Hitchen in this directory and have seen it spelt that way a number of times before.    :-)

pps In 1851, at least, the current Bancroft Hitchin was Bancroft Street. 1851 census, Hertfordshire, Hitchin, District 2a.
