Hi Waralan,

OK, had a check against the names you gave looking for a link to Lincolnshire.  Only found one, who seems to be on the 1881 census twice, once on board a ship and once at home with his family.  Details are:

John RUTTER, married, 32, born Beer, Devon, (Capt.) fisherman
Robert RUTTER, married, 29, born Beer, Devon, Mate fisherman
Fred. MANNERS, unm, 21, born Greenwich, Kent, 3rd H fisherman
Jamie DOSSETT, unm, 47, born Isleworth, Middlesex, fisherman
Jack WELBOURNE, unm, 18, born Ross, York, fisherman

Source Information:
  Vessel   "Waterloo"
Census Place Great Grimsby, Lincoln, England
  Family History Library Film   1341781
  Public Records Office Reference   RG11
  Piece / Folio   3277 / 134

John RUTTER, head, married, 32, born Beer, Devon, Fisherman
Mary RUTTER, wife, married, 31, born Hull, York
Sarah A. RUTTER, daughter, 13, born Grimsby
Ada RUTTER, daughter, 9, born Grimsby
Mara RUTTER, daughter, 7, born Grimsby
Thirza RUTTER, daughter, 1, born Grimsby
Louisa HEARTGAGE, visitor, married, 21, born Hull, York

Source Information:
  Dwelling   138 Thorold Street
Census Place Clee With Weelsby, Lincoln, England
  Family History Library Film   1341780
  Public Records Office Reference   RG11
  Piece / Folio   3272 / 54
  Page Number   64

There does seem to be a connection with the fishing industry/shipping and with Hull with these Lincolnshire Rutter's.  The Edward W. Rutter born Laceby, living in Hull, is a marine engineer, and the Betsy Rutter with the daughter Annie, also born Laceby, is a sailing ships captains wife (and incidentally is also living at Clee with Weelsby).

Devon is a county in the South East of England, Great Grimsby (or just Grimsby) is a sea port with a fishing industry not far from Laceby, and Clee with Weelsby is a part of Cleethorpes which is a seaside resort and the next town along the coast from Grimsby.  You'll find both Grimsby and Cleethorpes on the same map as Laceby (link in post above).

I'm not sure that any of this leads you any further forward - have you ever heard talk of any involvement in the fishing/maritime industry?

The North East Lincolnshire Archives Office in Grimsby holds 30,000 fishing crew lists and registers of 4,000 Grimsby ships - their link is http://www.nelincs.gov.uk/leisure/archives/ - I've never researched this area so I'm not sure what information these would have and whether they would be any use to you.

Don't really know where to go next with this one - it just seems to keep throwing up more questions than answers.  :-\

Regards,
Sasha.

Hi,
My grandfather was born someplace in Lincolnshire in August of 1864.  I don't know anything about his parents, but about 1901 his widowed mother, some brothers and he emmigrated to the States.
Up til about about 1952, my father has been writting to some of our relatives in England.
Can anyone help me from that end?

Were you told who these relatives were, and what were their names? (if known). You may find leads from the family left behind in the UK within electoral roles for the region.

Welsh Jen,
As I was very young at that time-no.
However, it seems that he was actually born across the Shire line in Newton of Cambridgeshire.
