Andrew MURRAY 1828 + family Colvend
« on: Monday 29 March 10 18:34 BST (UK) »
Is anyone researching this family?
On the 1841 census:
Millburn Street, Twynholm
Margaret Donnelly 65 born Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland Ind
Elizabeth Donnelly 30 born Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland Ind
Andrew Murray    10 born Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland
Sarah Wilson    3 born Scotland
John Allan    29 born England Tailor
Elizabeth Allan 25 born England
John Allan    3 born Scotland
Ann Allan    3 Mo born England

In 1851 still in Millburn Street:
Margaret Daniely    73 born Twynholm pauper
Elizabeth Daniely       43 born Twynholm sempstress
Sarah Wilson       12 born Twynholm granddaughter
Henery Stevenson    53 born at sea Hawker

Elizabeth is possibly Margaret's daughter. Perhaps Andrew & Sarah were children of other daughters of Margaret so her grandchildren? Andrew I believe went to Canada & joined the army [before or after he went]. What happened to Sarah? Who was Margaret's husband?

Any information gratefully received.

Don't know if this helps at all with your research but Milburn Street is in Kirkcudbright, not Twynholm.

Hello Callywoods,

I have just had some information which leads me to believe the Andrew Murray I am looking for is this one:
1841 Camp Douglas, Balmaghie
John Murray    60   farmer born Scotland
Mary Murray    40   born Kirkcudbrightshire
Sarah Murray    15   born Kirkcudbrightshire
Agnes Murray    15   born Kirkcudbrightshire
Andrew Murray    13   born Kirkcudbrightshire
Elizabeth Murray 11   born Kirkcudbrightshire
John Murray    9   born Kirkcudbrightshire
James Murray    7   born Kirkcudbrightshire
Mary Murray    5   born Kirkcudbrightshire
Margaret Murray    2   born Kirkcudbrightshire
William Murray    7 Mo   born Kirkcudbrightshire
Jean McClure    15   born Kirkcudbrightshire

1851 Balmaclellan Village
James Lorimer    42   Wood Merchant (employing labourers), born Keir, Dumfries
Sarah Miller    54   servant, Housekeeper, born Ketton, Kirkcudbright
Margaret Lambert    29 servant, cook born Dalry, Kirkcudbright
James Larimer    6   son born Balmaclellan, Kirkcudbright
Charles Curran    28   servant born Ireland
Michael Burns    19   common labourer born Ireland
Andrew Murray    23   lodger, joiner, born Cheend, Kirkcudbright
I suspect Cheend could be a mistranscription of Colvend.

Would you be kind enough to look up any MIs you think may be this family? Many many thanks,

Josey

Sorry Josey, cant be any more help. I have looked at MIs of Balmaghie and Balmaclellan but cant find anything.
Have you found your 1841 Murrays in the 1851 census? I haven't been able to.

Best wishes Mary

Hello Callywoods,

Yes I found the parents of Andrew in 1851 in Cubbox, Balmaclellan. 1851/856/00 003/00 011

John Murry 73 born Caeravelock Dumfries farmer 125 ac employing 2 labourers
Mary Murry 51 born Crossmichael
James Murry 17 farmer's son
Mary Murry 15
William Murry 10 scholar
John Affleck 5 grandson scholar
+ 2 servants & a visitor

Grandson John was son of daughter Sarah & her husband Archibald Affleck.

Research on the IGI [film 457950] confirms the Andrew I am interested in as being son of John Murray & Mary Carson, baptised Whitecroft Colvend 16 JUN 1827  with the family group [though no siblings after Elizabeth are on this film].

My g-g-g grandfather was Archibald Affleck married to Sarah Murray from Balmaclellan, Scotland. (Is spelling correct?)   In 1852 they travelled to Canada, losing two children to death on the ocean voyage.  They made their way to Amherstburg Ontario (called Canada West in those days) by ship through the Great Lakes.  Then they walked 50km to Harrow, Ontario were they started a homestead at the corner of the 3rd Concession and McCormick Road.  A relative (or relatives) of Sarah accompanied them to the new land.  The Afflecks and Murrays were very successful in this area and had many children.  Today there are more Afflecks and Murrays than you can shake a stick at. (an old local farmer's expression)  In fact descendants of both families, as well as remaining locally here in Essex County, have also spread across Canada and the US.  I'm not currently doing any genealogical research, but would be willing to share any information to anyone interested.

That's really interesting, thanks for getting in touch. The research I was doing was for a friend - descendant of Andrew Murray - in Nova Scotia. I will email her & tell her that you have information on Sarah, Andrew's sister, to share. I am sure she will want me to send her email address to you via a rootschat personal message. However, you must post another 2 times [making 3 posts altogether] before I can send a pm. Just add a couple of short replies to this thread if you like.

Thanks again, will be in touch with the email address once I have cleared it with my friend.
