This is turning into one of those "my g.g. grandad travelled further than your g.g. grandad" topics  ::)

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Even so, a three hundred mile straight line trip with the militia after a "voyage" around East Anglia first seems quite impressive to me, specially on horseback and foot.

I agree. As I said, 100 miles was a long distance in 1900. A weeks walk is impressive to me as well. Or a day or so on a horse and cart or a train in 1900 was still impressive.

Oxford in 1901, Sussex in 1911, a fair distance.

Was watching an 'origin of the species' type program and they reckon it took the native australian's ancestors just 12,000 years to colonise/travel to australia from the horn of africa

5 gens per century. 600 gens total - if its 6000km that 10k per gen - perhaps 20-30k

Pretty impressive really. The travelling was to the unknown and very inhospitable

Even the Native Americans originated in Asia thousands of thousands of years ago.

Ahh, but is was a quick walk across Beringia in those days, because the two continents were connected by land  :)

Believed to be less than 20000 Coombes, but who if anyone inhabited the American continents earlier?

Carriages and trains were very handy before the invention of motor cars.
