Hi Lodger - my grandfathers family  - the Dunnes, also lived on Argyle Street.   From what my papa remembered, the tenement he lived in was pretty much where Lamara's timber yard is (I think it's still there - I've not been to Motherwell for a while).

With your knowledge of the area do you happen to know anything about Borlands buildings?  My papa first lived there before moving to Argyle Street - as far as I can see they were slum tenements.  I think they were more towards Flemington but can't find any records of them.

Many thanks,

Suzywong.

Hi Suzy,
Borlands Building was part of Portland Square on the Beehive Brae, through Flemington Cross, under the railway bridge heading for Craigneuk. It would have been on the right-hand side going up, past Mrs Givens' pub (the Beehive). Just about opposite where Belhaven Church is now, only a little further down.
According to the 1925 directory, James Dunn, labourer lived at 364 (which would be the house number for Craigneuk Street probably).
William Borland had a grocer's shop there so I guess he owned the building.

Suzy,
My mistake - Borland's building was on the left side of the Beehive brae going up, near to where Belhaven Church is now.

FAO: Lodger.

This is a bit off topic, but i see that you have interests of McCallum from Oban and I also see some names that I am researching.

Would you be able to contact me? I am related to the McCallums from Oban, Perthshire & Dumbartonshire. I have done extensive research on them and don't think that i have come across your user name before.

I don't know if you are allowed to post your email address on this site, I got a warning for doing it around ten years ago but you can find me on my website or Facebook page "Historic Hamilton". Please feel free to send me a PM.

Regards,
Garry McCallum

I am the American-born great granddaughter of Patrick & Maria Rooney's daughter Winifred. Honora was Winifred's sister.

Hello Inkeyfingers,
Welcome to Rootschat. The original poster of this topic hasn't been active on this forum for over five years now but, I have some information regarding the Rooney & Lennon families that I didn't have back in 2010 when the request by JulzDS was originally posted.
I have burial records from the Globe cemetery in Motherwell for 11 family members, adults and children,  If you are interested in this information please just reply here.
Best wishes, Lodger.
