There's a Ballylongford (town) in Co. Kerry and a Ballylongford (townland) in Co. Limerick.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Alan,

Let me tell you a little more of what I know.

Lillian and Mary were the only ones to come to England. the story goes they ran away as they were to be married to farmers sons. i do not know if this is true.
I do not know when they left Ireland for the uk but I do know that Mary married in Northampton England in 1923.
I have requested a copy of this licence from the GRO and am hoping it will contain some information I do not already know.

As far as I know Bridget and Margaret known as Meg stayed in Ireland.
Bridget died of TB I don't know when or where and Meg I really know nothing about.

I have one photogarph labeled Greta uncle Michael Harrold.
And Great Aunt Josie Mulvihull, cousin Jack and Cousin Kathleen.  it is a 70's picture and Micheal and Josie look quite old.

So where Micheal and Josie other children?

Unfortunately I do not know whether it is Balylongford Co. Kerry or Co. Limerick.

Not much to go on but i apreciate your help

bit of a dilemma....the only Mulvihull is in Doon, Co Kerry ......extracted record birth of John Mulvihull b 9th May 1877
John is commonly called Jack....so a possible.....does the year of birth 1877 seem to fit in ?..probably not if it states COUSIN JACK on the photo....(Jack was probably b about 1920 ish??)

parents of John b in Kerry were Jeremiah Mulvihull and Mary (Madigan )Mulvihul
so..not really made any progress....allan ;)

Mulvihull = Mulvihill?
Was there a "Greta" in that photo or is it "Great uncle Michael" and "Great Aunt Josie"? ;)
Are Jack and Kathleen children or adults in the photo?

At any rate the marriage certificate when it arrives will help.
It will give Mary's father's name and the witnesses - maybe Lillian is in the area.
Is "Balylongford" the place the family have as the birthplace of Mary, or perhaps just a place they lived in at a later time?
Do you know if/when/where/who Lillian married?

So far the closest family I have been able to locate on the censuses is this one:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Limerick/Broadford/Barnagarrane/637746/
five children in the household: Bridget, Margaret, John (Michael John?), Lie ("Lil" on original), Josephine.
but six total children born to mother Mary - so perhaps Mary Jr was away from the household at the time?

Hi All,
I think that you have located them for me. :D

and I just rang my Mum and asked her, she was very lucid (not always the case) and told me that Mary Jr was sent away to live with better off cousins. that explains a lot.
Mum says that Mary's birth year was always unknown but she died in 1966 age 71 so that would make her born in 1895 and until the wedding certificate arrives i won't know where she was born.

Lillian married Albert Fields in the UK, i have not been able to find out when. not listed on the free BMD yet.

John was known as Jack.

i must say after years of wondering this is great, maybe when the 1901 census comes on line I can find evidence of Mary - thanks Nora

I don't think English marriage certificate will list birthplace- just residence at time of marriage.

thank you for pointing that out -about the wedding certificate. I will possibly have to wait until the 1921 census is released to find out about her.
But I feel so much closer now.
is there a BMD index for ireland after a certain date? Maybe i can find out what happened to Mary's siblings.
