Mum says that Mary's birth year was always unknown but she died in 1966 age 71 so that would make her born in 1895 and until the wedding certificate arrives i won't know where she was born.

Welcome to Rootschat Nora

The marriage certificate should give Mary's age (assuming she told the truth) and the name and Occupation of her father, so hopefully this should tell you if you have the right person.

There is a search for Irish BMDs but it's not as easy to use as the England/Wales FreeBMD. Here's a link. If you go to the boards for Ireland you should be able to find some tips for searching.

Good luck

Index to Irish civil registration is online (goes up to 1958)- here's a more direct link:

There's also a thread of sarch hinters here but don't be afraid to ask if you've any questions or problems with it-

Hello All who have helped me so far.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Rahan/Rahan/431646/

I have found this family on the 1911 Irish census. And As Mary was sent to live with relatives and the age seems about right as she was the eldest child.

do you think it is feasible that she was a domestic servant?

Hi just a thought but i am guessing 18 was old enough to leave a home and get a job.
So perhaps they are not her cousins after all.

If Mary was sent to live with relatives who were wealthier then it's quite possible that they would employ her as a general servant. Mary's own family would have one less mouth to feed. 18 is certainly old enough to leave home and work 'in service' I have often seen census records where families employed servants as young as 12, and sometimes younger.

When the marriage certificate arrives this should tell you the name of Mary's father and his occupation. This could help you to locate them on the 1911 census in Ireland.

When the certificate arrives if you add the information onto this post, I'm sure Rootschatters will see if they can help.

Hello Everybody,

So today after i got home from visiting my Mum :( the wedding cert was here for Mary A Harold. i ordered it March 30th - not the best service but it is here.

Her father was Micheal Harold a Farmer so it makes this http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Limerick/Broadford/Barnagarrane/637746/  her family for sure.

Mary Ann is on the cert but on her grave it says Mary Ita. is Ita the Irish for Ann?

there are possible records for her birth on
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=0

how do I order or get to see certificates to check?

Thanks once again
Patricia

Hi Norah42,

I replied to an earlier query which you may not have seen. I also have information on this branch of the family and can supply you with details if you have not already got them yet.
Regards,
Sean

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.
