Death Duty Registers?
« on: Wednesday 31 March 10 16:23 BST (UK) »
I've been searching the National Archives online catalogue and I've come across a record that might be an ancestor of mine.

It is a death duty register, I've never heard of them until now. Does anybody know anything about them -

What do they contain?
What makes them different to a will?
Will they include other family member's names?
Are they worth £3.50?!

According to "The Family Tree Detective" by Colin D. Rogers, the Estate Duty Registers as well as including the names of the legatees, can provide additional information on events subsequent to probate, including disputes, and even the names of children if these have not appeared in the will itself.

Well, my curiosity got the better of me and I went ahead and bought it  ::)

Gutted really because it is literally one sentence!!
Also, it's not the person I was hoping it would be, but there is a distant connection.

All I would say is don't buy these records unless you really need to!
