Where now? Stuck with Glasgow marriage 1852
« on: Wednesday 23 March 05 10:48 GMT (UK) »
Please can you help, I don't know where to look next!  ???

According to birth records from several of their children James Shearer (born c1838) married Mary Irvine (born circa1834) in Glasgow 1852. I cannot find their marriage record on scotlandspeople or the IGI. Do these databases contain marriages from all churches or do I need to search some other records? Where would I find these records please?

I have very little info on this couple as due to my location I've not been able to access earlier censuses than 1881 - when Mary is dead and James's birthplace is "Scotland". The family moved around Scotland alot and I don't expect them to be in any later Lanarkshire census than 1851.

Thank you for  taking the time to read.
Best Wishes, Jenny

Hi Jenny,  Pre 1855 records, known as OPR's were records recorded by the Church of Scotland,  so if the couple were not married in the C of S  then you probably won't find a marriage for them.   All an OPR marriage/banns will  give you is date of marriage, or date it was contracted; names of parties; place or parishes of residence.
Do look out for the 1871 census, due soon, believe it's being tested at the moment to see if it's running ok.   Hopefully, you will get the info. you need from this census.

Cheers Liz

Thankyou Liz! I thought that might be the case.

I'm longing for that 1871 census to break down my brick walls. Hope they haven't been mistranscribed!  ;D

Thanks Cammy!

Managed to get on earlier today and found my family without any problems luckily!  ;D  ;D Can't manage to get back on to play tonight though. Thanks for the tips about problems - I'll look out for those.

It's given me birthplaces and a slightly different birth year for James, so more to work on now. All children present and correct!

Best Wishes, Jenny
