Help. Where to look next?
« on: Wednesday 23 March 05 10:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have an EDWARD H COOKE b. circa 1830 Swaffham, Norfolk and
MARY ANN ?            b. circa 1831 Hillborough, Norfolk

Now I know they were married (well, almost definitely) as they and their children appear in the 1881 census:

    Dwelling:   Rudham Road
   Census Place:   Bagthorpe, Norfolk, England
Source:   FHL Film 1341480     PRO Ref RG11    Piece 1992    Folio 22    Page 12
                         Marr   Age   Sex   Birthplace
Edward H. COOKE   M   51    M   Swaffham, Norfolk, England
   Rel:   Head
   Occ:   Shepherd
Mary COOKE      M   49    F   Hilborough, Norfolk, England
   Rel:   Wife
Edward H. COOKE   U   24    M   Southacre, Norfolk, England
   Rel:   Son
   Occ:   Ag Lab
Isaac COOKE      U   18    M   Southacre, Norfolk, England
   Rel:   Son
   Occ:   Blacksmith
Dyson COOKE       12    M   Southacre, Norfolk, England
   Rel:   Son
   Occ:   Scholar
Jesse COOKE          10    M   Southacre, Norfolk, England
   Rel:   Son
   Occ:   Scholar
Ethel COOKE          7    F   Bagthorpe, Norfolk, England
   Rel:   Daur
   Occ:   Scholar
Arthur COOKE       5    M   Bagthorpe, Norfolk, England
   Rel:   Son

But I can't for the life of me find their wedding certificate. I've looked on FreeBMD and Ancestry.co.uk but without any luck. Can anybody help me?

Oh, by the way, I've got a copy of one of their sons birth certs., but due to the registrars handwriting, I'm not sure of Mary Ann's maiden name. Have a butchers yourself at  http://img68.exs.cx/img68/2829/copy...okesbirthce.jpg

Cheers

It looks like Warner to me.
Smith (Lancashire), McKenna (Ireland/Liverpool/Leyland), Maynard (Hertfordshire/London/Preston), Ricketts (Gloucestershire/Wigan/Preston), Scowcroft (Preston), Harling (N. Yorkshire/Lancashire), Willis (Preston), Clegg (Manchester/Preston), Dodd (Wigan/Cheshire), Alston (Lancashire), Hulks (Hertfordshire), Nicholson (Lancashire/Cumbria), Russell (Lancashire), Wilson (Cumbria), Bracewell (Lancashire), Moxham (Lancashire0

Here they are again:

1871

Cottage, Newton, Southacre

Edward Henry head mar 41 shepher b.Swaffham
Mary Ann wife 40 b.Hilbrough
William son 16 shepherd b.Castleacre
Edward Henry son 14 b.Hingham?
Sarah Ann dau 13 b.Castleacre
Elizabeth dau 9 b.Southacre
Isac son 8 b.S
Mary dau 6 b.S
Dyson son 2 b.S
Jessia (sic) son 6m?? b.S

Rg10/1869 folio 7 page 7

Maybe you can try and find them in the 1861 census in case there are any further clues there and possible to narrow down a marriage date.

The full set of bmd indexes can be viewed at http://www1837online.com (pay per view) - freebmd is not yet complete and ancestry is a copy of freebmd though a little behind in the update process.

Best wishes

Thanks for that Casalguidi,
I didn't know that Edward and Mary Ann had a son called William. He would have left home by 1881.

Also thanks for everyone following the link to the maiden name. Winner or Warner seem to be the most popular thoughts.
