Help with Districts on birth certificate please
« on: Saturday 03 April 10 11:18 BST (UK) »
???  ???  I am trying to figure out where my family might have lived.  I have got a birth certificate that gives the Superintendent Registrars district as Rathdrum and the Registrars District as Ashford.  Then it says the district of Ashford in the Union of Rathdrum in the county of Wicklow.  The actual entry just gives the address as Wicklow.

Could this mean they lived in Wicklow town, or would they have lived in Ashford itself?

I dont see a separate Registrar's District of Ashford within the Superintendent Registrar's District of Rathdrum in the details I have (from 1880s) but suspect that Wicklow as the address in this case refers to the Town rather than then County.

In the details I have the Registrar's District of Ashford Wicklow includes the Civil parishes of  Rathnew, Glenealy and electoral districts of Killiskey, Wicklow etc these include both Ashford and Wicklow Towns.

Thank you for that.  The birth certificate was slightly earlier - 1867 so maybe the districts had been amalgamated.  I suspect it was Wicklow town.

The exact place of birth should appear in the proper column on the certificate.

It just says First January 1867 Wicklow.  The column for his father says Thomas Thompson Wicklow and the Informant column says Thomas Thompson father Wicklow.

Then the place of birth is probably Wicklow town- is there no street address?

Any birth certificates I've seen for a child born in a town says something like "Church St. Wicklow" if no townland is listed. Does make it a bit easier to tace the family if you've a more exact location.

I'd say if it was anything other than the main street area, then the registrar would have included it. There doesn't seem to be many side streets to the town in those days - see the OSI map (late 1820s to 1840s) : Wicklow Town (click historic or historic b/w)

It may be worth checking for parish records to see if a baptism includes more details ... but many of these (mostly RC) that I've seen for other parishes if Co. Wicklow for this time dont include detailed addresses.
