How to find half-brother with limited info?
« on: Tuesday 06 April 10 22:02 BST (UK) »
I have a half-brother, from my fathers first marriage.
This is the problem I have - my father is long dead, and I have no contact with his family, even when I did have contact none of them could tell me anything about my brother.

What I know is his first and middle name - going by web searches and what I did hear from the family he may have changed his surname to his mothers maiden name, no idea what that is. I know he was studying to become a doctor, and that he is around 12 years older than me (that'll put him in his late 30's), but I don't know his date of birth or location...thus cannot rely on Salvation Army for help.

The only way I can think of to find him is to find his mother first - possibly find my fathers marriage certificate, problem with that is that I don't know when they got married or her name -_-

Do I stand any chance of ever finding him?
If so, any ideas on where I can start?

As a note, I know he may not want to know me, it's been over ten years since our father died (my brother may not even know that our father is dead) so if he'd wanted to know he'd have gotten in touch by now...but he may not know I exist, or there may be any number of other reasons why he's not been in touch, also I've moved and changed my name. I'd just like to try to get in touch, or at least find out who he is.

hello and welcome to RootsChat

RootsChat policy is to not post details of nthe living or recently deceased-so we must not post names of half brother.

When you have made 3 posts you can use the PM facilty

So if you would like to PM me when you have made 3 posts I could look for possible marriages and births without posting on the main board

I would suggest that you try to find your father's first marriage.  You can probably find his wife's name from the index.  If not you can obtain the certificate and it will tell you his wife's maiden name.

Alternatively if you find the birth of your half brother then the mother's maiden surname will be shown in the index.

Welcome to Rootschat

I was wondering if you have your father's death certificate, it won't give you your half brother's name but it may have  the name of your father's wife's name.

Since your father is dead there is no problem in posting his details on here.

If you can give us his name and the likely date and place of the marriage someone on here may be able to find it.

Hi Bloodheart,

I guess we must not post any details about your half-brother but I expect we may be able to help with your father.

Could you tell us everything you can about him? Full name, date of birth, where he was born would be ideal but as much as you know would be helpful.

Same for either of his wives (so long as they are also long-dead).

Welcome to RootsChat. We love a challenge. :)

Hi welcome to Rootschat

You obviously know your father's name, and as your half brother is 12 years older than you, you'll need to search around that date. ie if you were born in 1982, look for marriages around and before 1970 in the area you know he was living.

Better still, reply to this and then you will have made 3 posts. Then you can PM Suz with all the information re dates, names that you have and she may be able to help you - she's good.  :D Just click on the green scroll under her name to PM her.

My fathers name was John Frier

His date of birth we believe (my mother is about as much use as the rest of my family with giving information - and it's somewhat uncomfortable asking, again making it hard) was 22nd November 1944 and would have been born in Newcastle upon Tyne. Died around October 1996/97. He would have probably married both times in Newcastle upon Tyne.
