Alfred Scarlett
« on: Tuesday 06 April 10 22:38 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any info re Alfred Scarlett who in 1881 said he was born in Coventry?  (Family legend was that he was Irish.)  He and his wife Mary nee Wagstaff, also born Coventry appeared in 1881 in their 30s but there are no earlier records.

Hiya Isobel.....
1881 census returns
43 1/2 Mill St (looks like over a shop)
Kingston upon Hull
Yorkshire
Alfred Scarlet (one t)  head 34 born Coventry, NOTTINGHAM, England ????(is this a district of Nottingham?)
Mary Scarlet wife 31 born Coventry ,Nottingham,England ????
Alfred Scarlet son aged 2 born Bristol,
Henry Scarlet son 8 months Hull, Yorkshire
IF the details are spot on, we should look for Alfred Scarlet b 1846/47..
NO birth or marriage on freebmd that matches census details....one Alfred Scarlett b 1843 Pershore (herefords / Worcs border ?.40 miles from Coventry..could  this be him ??....
nothing for a birth for Alfred Scarlett in Ireland 1830-1850
nothing for a birth of Mary Wagstaff in Ireland
far too many births for Mary Wagstaff b 1839-1840....only 2 in Coventry 1856 and 1871...first in Nottingham is 1868....so this IS a mystery.....
can I ask where you received the surname of Mary was Wagstaff ?......allan ???
oakes,liverpool..neston..backford..poulton cum spittal(bebington)middlewich,cheshire......   sacht,helgoland  .......merrick,herefordshire adams,shropshire...tipping..ellis..  jones,garston,liverpool..hartley.dunham massey..barker. salford

Hello,

1891 RG12; Piece: 3932; Folio 137; Page 13
has Mary born 'Yousull' and this can be seen on census form

1901  RG13; Piece: 3065; Folio: 33; Page: 19
Mary is still married but is in Lincs as a hawker and born Coventry

That is if I have the right ones.

There is a Mary Wagstaff born 1848 Foleshill, Coventry in 1851 and 1861.
I am wondering if 'Yousull' is a corruption of Foleshill - a long shot I know  :-\

It's much more comprehensive than mine  ;D

I think Arthur E shows up in other censuses - isn't this irritating  ;)

I was impressed too with the occupation switch  :)

Ignore that about Alfred E - various ones but not quite the same  ::)
There is a Scarlett family with children born Pershore (as in garstonite's post) which is presumably the Shipston on Stour birth but there is no Alfred with them in 1851  ???
