Hugh MACKAY b 1809
« on: Wednesday 07 April 10 02:30 BST (UK) »
I have recently found the headstone of my gggrandfather.
 The inscription reads
Hugh MACKAY Borough Officer Tain died 18 March 1865 aged 56.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me of any publication or any thing that may give more information about him and his death?
many thanks. Mila

Hi Mila  :)

If you go to Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk you can register with the site and then you will be able to search the death index and download his death certificate for 6 credits (1 credit = 20p)

He is listed in the index as Hugh Mckay (note spelling). His mother's maiden name is down as McCulloch

Hi, I'm chasing info on the family of George McKay/Mackay born in Tain in 1819.  I believe he has a brother, Hugh, born in 1810 in Tain.  Any chance it's the same family?  (There are also sisters, Barbara, Jannet and Margaret with parents James Mackay and Margaret Ross).

Hello mac2...I have the death cert of my Hugh Mackay/mckay....His parents are listed as Angus McKay and Jannet McCulloch.   Family names are the same though. I have not been able to find any trace of my Hughs birth cert at all but have also his marriage cert and that states he was born in Dornoch.Sorry I can't help you more..keep trying!!  Good luck.
The Tain museum is wonderful as Skoosh said. I have had a huge amount of help from them.Very much worth a try...

Thanks azmara for your prompt response.  It was a long shot, but worth a try.  Are the Old Parish Registers my best source?  .... and is there email access to the Tain museum?  Thanks again.

Hi Mac2./ I found most of my information on Scotlands people, then emailed the Tain through time museum. Click on the link Skoosh has, then on contacts on the left of page.... :D
