*completed*Newspaper reports 1977
« on: Wednesday 07 April 10 06:11 BST (UK) »
Hi Canadian Rootschatters,
I am interested to know if any of you can help me dig out some newspaper reports from my great uncles death in 1977.

This relative was 'lost' to our family for some unknown reason, as a child/baby, so we are curious to learn as much as possible about him.

His name was John Barron (known as "Barrons"). Born in Glasgow, 1904, he ended up living in Willowdale, Toronto and he died from a housefire at this home in Feb 1977, age 72.

He was not married, nor had any children. He is buried in York Cemetery, Willowdale in an unmarked grave (plot P, Lot 461). No family have ever seen this grave because we all live in NZ/Australia.

He actually died later in St Michaels Hospital, Toronto, 18 Feb 1977. No doubt from resulting burns and injuries from the fire.

Any articles you can find or websites you can direct me to, would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Janine

Here's a link to the archives of the Toronto Star newspaper:
http://pagesofthepast.ca/
It's a pay site. A one hour subscription costs $3.95 and a 24 hour subscription costs $6.95 (Canadian funds).

Hi Janine,

Go to the Toronto Reference Library site & click on the 'Ask A Librarian' & state your request mentioning you are in OZ. They have been very helpful in the past.

http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/

They have all the local newspapers on microfilm. Give them all the info you have about John & I'm sure they will help.

Good hunting.

morning J.A.M,
thanks for your tip. I might have better luck there since I tried the Toronto Star site and it's not very user friendly I have to say. I spent an hour searching key words and nothing came up. Though I did find John Barrons death notice, so it was worth it in the end I guess.

It's hard not knowing the exact date or location for the house fire in question, but hopefully the Library staff will be able to help me.

Many thanks to you and Jacquie for your input.
Regards, Janine

The deaths in that index only go to about 1937. It doesn't cover deaths that are still protected by privacy laws.

Thanks "Vbain", and Jacquie,
shame that site didn't have my ancestor - could've saved me some money.

It seems most resources for newspaper stories require a search fee. The Toronto Library is the same deal.

Oh well. It was certainly worth asking. Thank you to everyone for your help with my request. It's been very useful. I at least have two avenues to follow through with if I want to.

You can try Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at

www.raogk.org/ontario.htm

I know they have a volunteer in Toronto that can look up newspaper items so it may be worth a try.
