Wyke Lodge, Ulwell, home of artist Rosina Bean please?
« on: Saturday 10 April 10 11:17 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me where Wyke Lodge, Ulwell, is or was please?

It was home of Oliver Bean, architect and his family in the 1920s.  His daughter Rosina, a local artist, lived there into the 1950s but appears to have died in Bournemouth in 1961.

I can see Ulwell Road on Google maps, but its a very long road and I don't know which bit Wyke Lodge might be on, or near.

Not trying to trace living people here, just trying to flesh out Rosina's life a little. As far as I know she did not marry or have any children.

Thanks,
 :) Barbara

Hi,

Slightly off topic, but Kelly's 1915 Directory for Swanage lists Oliver Richard Bean living at Wyke Lodge, Ulwell so it looks as though the family were there some years before 1920.

If no locals can help perhaps the Dorset History Centre in Dorchester would be the place to contact.

That's great NannyJan  :D

I had a closer look at the Bean's 1901 record, and they were living in the village of Wyke in Surrey then; so that may be where the name Wyke Lodge came from.

Hi,

Were the family living there by the time of the 1911 census?  A look at their neighbours might help to pin point the house.

There is Wyke Regis in Dorset ( near Weymouth) so the name probably came from their home in Surrey,

Good idea - they were in Ulwell in 1911, according to the free advanced search, with children born in Swanage 1903-1908. 'Wyke Lodge' did not come up on the search though.

Need to renew 1911 subs to find out more, fortunately its my birthday next week, so treats are permitted  8)

Been on the 1911 now.  The Beans were at Wyke Lodge but it had been transcribed as Whyke so didn't show up on search.

Their neighbours were: White Cliffe Farm; then White Cliff; then Wyke Lodge and then thankfully, 63 Ulwell Road.

Googled Whitecliff Farm to see where it was and found that the artist Paul Nash stayed there for a while in 1934.  As Rosina was still at wyke Lodge then, it is possible that the two artists met  :D :D

This is what the householder at White Cliff (in 1911) wrote for his address - I can't read the word after Dorset England so I cannot tell if he is being rude or nice about Dorset!

Hi,

If you go to the Swanage page of the Dorset OPC site and look at the Braye 1890 map you can see White Cliff Farm; might help pinpoint the house.

No I can't work out what the chap has written.   ::)

Looking again it might just say 'Europe on the face of the globe'

There's always one isn't there?  ::)

Thanks for map link, I'll have a look. Found a no.63 on Street View but lots more houses built since 1911, so might not be the same one. Although it is a lovely old cottage.

thanks again

I am trying to track down some information on an artist called RC Bean who did etchings of the swanage and Bournemouth areas of dorset. It may be Rosina and I wondered if you could confirm this. The image wouldn't upload but you can find it on my flickr site at  http://www.flickr.com/photos/etchingsplus/5064574742/
