St Nicholas, Liverpool, PRs, VOSE
« on: Sunday 11 April 10 03:27 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Any chance of having an IGI (extracted) baptism verified please?

Edward Vose baptised 20 May 1798 at St Nicholas, Liverpool, parents stated as being Thomas Vose and Mary Ellis, batch C005997.

The 1851 census for Plumstead, Kent gives his birthplace as Liverpool and his age 52, which would see him born about 1799, close enough to 1798!

I have checked out some sites listed in the Lancashire Resources board but the closest I came was some PRs for St Nicholas which started at 1892, a hundred years too late  :(

If anyone reading this is researching the Vose family and would like info on his marriage and children etc I would be happy to supply it.

Regards from Oz.

Thanks for that info Allan, I'll make a note of it.  It will be just my luck that although there are all those Voses around, none will have any info on my wife's line  ;D

The other Voses may not have moved far but Edward Vose certainly did, it is evident he joined the army because in the 1851 his occupation was Chelsea Pensioner, Labourer and in 1861 Chelsea Pensioner, Blacksmith

In 1819 he married Elizabeth at Frindsbury in Kent, I'm told there is/was an army barracks at nearby Gillingham, Kent which would explain what he was doing down there.

Around the period 1827 and 1829 Edward was in Armagh, Ireland where two sons were born,

The 1841 Census shows that he and his family were then in Greenwich, from my research they appeared to have remained in the Greenwich and Plumstead area of what was Kent in those days , now South East London.

Regards.

Hi,

I think the above church you found is the wrong St. Nicholas.  The batch number you quote from the IGI is actually for the one now called Our Lady and St. Nicholas with St. Anne.  Keep checking www.lan-opc.org.uk as it is constantly being updated.

Mo

Hi,

Just been into the site and found the baptisms for Our Lady and St Nicholas jump from 1787 to 1800  :(

I've sent them an email asking if there are any plans to put the baptisms for the year 1798 online.

Regards.

Hi the Vose family in Garston where mine they came to Liverpool from  burscough Ormskirk prior to that Rufford prior to which Crossens. Would be great to compare what we have.  For some reason not yet apparent the Vose families tend to travel to St Nicholas church to marry, mine did that they then returned to Burscough had a family and then came to Garston presumably for work. So far have found no reason why they would have come just to marry. Both lived in Burscough, they were both of age, wife was not pregnant ( to my knowledge) so bit of a mystery.
Morris x Thomas family. I think they lived in Meline but are registered at Narberth.

Hi Minera,

Below is an outline of my wife's Vause/Vose line

Ralph Vause bap 1705 Blackrod & Elizabeth Woodcock.

Edward Vose bap 1735 Blackrod & Catharine or Katherine Shaw

Thomas Vose bap 1769 St Chad Liverpool & Mary Ellis.

Edward Vose bap 1798 O L St Nicholas Liverpool & Elizabeth Weller.

Edward Vose 1789 was in the Army when he married Elizabeth Weller in Gillingham Kent, after he left the Army he and Elizabeth settled in Woolwich, Kent.

Any of the above ring a bell?

Regards.
