Holmes family from Donegal
« on: Thursday 24 March 05 10:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone

Just thought I would post my names for my Holmes family from Donegal.
I have a Thomas Holmes who married a Margaret Ann Carland on 8 Mar 1860 in Raphoe Barony Donegal.
A son Thomas Holmes was born 1860 Raphoe Barony Donegal.
The family then came out to Australia in between  this time frame 1860-1866.
As yet I have not found their immigration record in oz, still looking.

Hoping to hear from anyone with a connection to this family.

kind regards
Trudi

Hi Trudi,

My great grandfather John Holmes is buried in Killea graveyard which is on the border between Derry and Donegal, don't know officially which side.  date was 1900.  I could not find his tombstone but there is a Holmes family plot in the cemetery.

The photos I have are greater than 500 kb, maybe I will try to zip them.

There is a place, village? called Holmestown near Raphoe, Donegal

Hope this is of interest.

Sam

Mmmm interesting about your John Holmes being buried in Killea - so far I have been unable 2 find a death record in either Victoria/WA for John or his wife Susan. Bit of a mystery as 2 what happened 2 them both ????

Once again many thanks 4 your input & I will check that site out Rathmore

Hi there,

Don't know if this is of any concern but my Great Great Grandfather was Samuel Holmes B:1874 who was from Co.Donegal (I think he might be from the Altaghaderry area but it's just an assumption). I'm not sure which part of Donegal but he lived in Londonderry across the border and married my G G Grandmother Martha Davis who was also of Donegal.

Just thought I would put in my input in case it would come up at any point in your research! ;D

Hi Stevie,

Entries in Census records for 1901 and 1911 for Samuel Holmes (wife Martha, son Samuel, etc).  Could be a brother of John Holmes although religion different (CoI and Presb).  John Holmes married in Clooney CoI church in Derry City in December 1869 to Jane Gallagher (from Donegal).

Hope this is of interest.

Hi,

I have not been able to get a confirmed birth date of this John Holmes.  It should be around 1837, probably in Donegal.  Next time I am in Ireland I will try newspapers and church records.

Good luck with your research.
