Good afternoon,

Have you checked the 1911 Canadian census? You can search this census via the transcription database at www.automatedgenealogy.com. Hope this helps.

Thanks JDC

I can't find Albert at the moment, I guess the surname is mistranscribed, I'll keep looking.

I need you to send an email, as the  pictures of the papers are large. (all legal too)
The birth date is right.

Hi Johnathan,

Knowing he has attestation papers means he likely fought in Europe during WW1. You should be able to get his service records from the national LAC, These are relatively inexepensive - just the cost of copying his records file. vbain has given you their website addy. Again, hope this helps.

vbain and JDC

I know you guys are trying to help, and I do appreciate it.  If you re-read my original post you will see that I already have Albert's attestation papers.  I also know where and when he was killed.  From other feedback on this thread I have discovered when he came to England, and when he went from England to France.  These dates were new to me.  I would like to find the 1911 Canadian census record, but CRUST is almost always mistranscribed, and I'm struggling to find him.

Thanks again for all your efforts.

Jonathan

I checked automatedgenealogy.com but couldn't find anything on your Albert Edward Crust. I concentrated on the areas of Yorkton and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Brandon and Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. This was the area that recruited for the 1CMR. I did find a Crust family in Manitoba and also in Ontario. The name was not very common on the 1911 census. Would your Albert be related to either of these families. Do you know if he went to a relative on his arrival in Canada.

I also checked on ancestry.ca and came up with 2 Albert Edward Crust's. Your Albert served in the CEF with parent's William and Charlotte. The other Albert,  I found under UK Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919. He was born in Middlesex and his parents's were Henry James and Emily Ann Crust. He died in 1917. I thought I should post this information in case you were unaware of another person with the same name.
On the ancestry site, I also found
Under Border Crossing From Canada to US 1895-1956
Albert Edward Crust, b. England, residence Canada, arrival date ? -  Port Huron, Michigan, USA.
I can't check further on this site as I don't have a membership but someone else may be able to look this information up for you. I couldn't find him crossing back into Canada. This may be why we can't find him on the census information in Canada. He may have worked his way west through the USA. Hope this helps in your search for information.

Afternoon folks,

Quite a few people travel (then and now) from the eastern provinces thru the USA to go to the western Canada provinces to live. Likely, your rellie would/could have done this. The time he travelled there would have been at the tail end of the great migration west which started in the 1880s.

Val, would you pls put links in here for the info you found so I can have look and follow up with it if I can. When I checked automatedgenealogy.com there were 16 CRUST names but no Albert as well. Perhaps you can check the variants Johnathan to see if anything comes close in the 1911.

Cheers, JDC

I have found Albert Crust, and details of his service. Includes a photo (not good) of his grave, and a scroll with his name.
Need an email to send this to.
