(Church) Hayes Family
« on: Wednesday 14 April 10 20:57 BST (UK) »
Good Evening All,

I am looking to find some information on Richard C. Hayes. I have recently started to look at this line of my tree but the family is very hard to find. I have been able to locate Richard Hayes on the 1930 US Census in McHenry County, Illinois:

Richard C. Hayes (C = most likely Church)
Age at last birthday 53 (born c1877)
Living with: Clara (wife, married in October 1906 McHenry County, Illinois, aged 42), Lyle (son, aged 15), Herman (son, aged 12) and Tura M (Dau, aged 11).
On the census it states that he immigrated to the USA in 1890 (born in England)

I have been unable to find him on the UK 1881 census and also any BMD records in England.
From what I can work out he would have been 13 years old when he emigrated to the USA. Is anyone able to tell me if he went "across the pond" with other family members? Or if he appears on the 1900 census?

What could be possible, but I can by no means confirm is that a gentleman named Charles Henry Church HAYES (b 1841) could be his father. I do know however that Charles had at least one daughter: Sarah Elizabeth Church Hayes.

Thank you for your help
Sarah

The 1920 Census also says that he was naturalized in 1905.

The 1910 Census says he immigrated in 1891 and was naturalized.

Wow, thank you all for your quick responses and help on this! I didn't even realise that there were other children than Lyle, Herman & Tura.

@shellyesq, it is interesting how the different census' indicate two very different years of naturalisation.

Many thanks once again

The only one that specifies a year of naturalization was the 1920 Census.  The 1910 Census just has a year of immigration.

The 1900 Census says he was naturalized, which wouldn't fit with the 1905 naturalization date on the 1920 Census, but I would take the information on the 1900 Census with a grain of salt since the head of the household may have been giving Richard's information.  If you want to check out the actual 1900 Census record, you can see it for free here:  http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start
