House missing on 1911 census
« on: Thursday 15 April 10 20:20 BST (UK) »
I looked on 1911 census to see who lived in a particular house at that time but there wasn`t an entry for it. The house was built in 1905 I know this because I owned it for 26 years. The number was/is 42. Numbers 40,41 and 43,44 are recorded but no 42. Any ideas why this would be?

Could it be simply that it was unoccupied?  I don't know how address searches work on the 1911, but perhaps if a house is unoccupied it doesn't get indexed.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

If the house was empty then there will be no householder's schedule for it, and consequently it will not be in the census. The 1911 Census differs from all the previous censuses in that there are no enumerators books, which in the other censuses  show empty/unoccupied houses.

Hi,
Depends where you are looking, on FindMyPast sometimes the name of the street is spelt slightly different and sometimes if the house has a name it may be under that name. If you are using FindMyPast try the address search and check for similar street names, house name  or under other establishments.
Good luck

Isn't it that only the householders schedules for England/Wales have been published?  The Irish census 1911 has all the associated pages describing the buildings and whether they are occupied.  Do these still exist for England/Wales or were they never compiled?  It seems odd that they would want so much extra detail for Ireland, if they were not collecting it for England/Wales too.

We might be able to trace the name of the occupant in 1911 from contemporary directories. What is the street and town?

Have you looked at the enumerators schedule for that street?

You can do so by opening the image of one of the neighbouring properties.
Then at the top of the page click on 'list' on the right hand side at the top.
It will then give you the names of the householder at every address on that page.

Most of the times the reason for there being no number xxx is because it was a shop or laundrette  ;D

What I meant was that the address would not appear in an address search of the census schedules  :)
There are the enumerator's summary images available but you can't search these.
