I have just checked the 1851 for M.Tydfil where William Powell aged 54, a widower, is described as born in Merthyr Tydfil? Where do you get Llanspyddid from??

Welcome back Garfydd
The 1851 census is wrong. The 1841 census says he was not born in Glamorgan and the 1861 census says Llanspyddid.
He married Mary Williams in St Tydfil's Church, Merthyr Tydfil on 26th June 1824

Hi Greygirl  :)
I also have Powells in my line from Llanspyddid. My line is through through William Powell born about 1820, the son of Richard Powell - farmer.

What I have noticed when looking for births in the IGI is that many are transcribed with the fathers first name as the surname. I found this out when looking for some other family members in Llanigon, and familysearch confirmed by email that my particular ones were incorrectly transcribed and were not as a result of old Welsh naming systems.

I cannot say if this is the case for Llanspyddid, but if you look through all the births (rather than search by name) you can find a 'William William' born to Wm Powel and Margaret - baptised September 1792, and also a 'John William' to the same named parents baptised in June 1795. There is  also a 'Margaret William' to the same named parents in 1797 and a 'Thomas William' in 1790 and an 'Elizabeth William' in 1788.

Hope this makes sense
MarMnkly :) :)

Thank you MarMnkly
Your tip has proved to be very helpful indeed and led to the discovery of a whole extra tribe of Powells, or Powels that I would never have found otherwise.
Best wishes
Greygirl

greygirl,
Your Wm.Powell re. 1841 y/n??, re. 1851 bo M.Tydfil  & Llanspyddid re. 1861? Do you have his marriage details?
I made a recon for him from the Lanspyddid BTs=one of 4 sisters and 3 brothers =William chr. 1792, Sept. 15 s/o William & Margaret.  With further delving I came up with a problem=William s/o William Powell, farmer, buried 1814, aged 22. All events Llanspyddid P.Church.

Re. greygirl area. The IGI assumes automatic patronymics, thus William Williams s/o William Powell.  This is a frequent mistake in the IGI, the system had virtually died out by 1800 and was not frequent 1700-1800. I have data on a Richard Powell family from Llanspyddid=the family of Glyn Davies, Chatham.

Yes, thank you - I do have the marriage details.
I don't suppose you could give me the names of the 4 sisters and 3 brothers?
