Records of Seafarers??

Hi
I've found out that my gt grandfather was a ships steward, seas.  He lived in Liverpool.  Can anyone tell me where to go to find out more about ships he was on etc?

Perhaps he was in the merchant navy  ???  There are a number of records at the National Archives in Kew, London.

See the Merchant Seamen leaflets/guides in the "getting started" section.  Also the same for Royal Navy men if you think that perhaps he was in the Royal Navy.

the merchant navy records are held in llanishen, cardiff but they are not complete.
