Michael Purcell and Murtaugh Hunt
« on: Wednesday 21 April 10 00:24 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have the  marriage cert for my Gt Gt grandparents Martin Purcell and Mary Hunt it took place in The Chapel New Ross in 1868

His father is Michael Purcell  Tinker of New Ross

Her father is shown as Murt Hunt but I think the name is Murtaugh he is a labourer of Kilscanlan

I have looked on the Griffiths valuation and found a Michael Purcell living in Windmill lane New Ross

also a Murtaugh Hunt in Kilscanlon

Can anyone help me any further with either family

Anything at all may help me go further

regards Carolyn

one detail to watch out for is that the father's address is not actually shown in a civil marriage cert, just the current residence of the bride and groom. This may not be the be where they were born or where their families live at the time.

Hi
Yes that is something I thought about also the name Purcell seems to be popular in Kilkenny which I know is just next door one thing I forgot to put on my posting was the date for the marriage it was 1868 I know it is all a long shot but I thought I might be lucky and the details may match up with someones tree

Also Kilscanlon as far as I can see is a small place so Murtaugh Hunt may mean something to someone

I believe the Irish Family History Foundation are working on parish records for Co. Wexford at the moment and hope to add them to their pay-website later this year. Maybe you will be able to locate some further details then

There's an index to Wexford church records on the Central Signposting  http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/csi/index.html not a great amount of info there though & no Hunt to match your Murtaugh.

Just so you know, Murt is also used as an abbreviation for Martin.

Hi I did not know that Murt can be short for Martin so thanks for that

I think I am right with Murtaugh as there is a Murtaugh Hunt showing on the Griffiths valuation list for Kilscanlon and as far as I can see it is a very small place it is on the marriage cert as Murt

some details on the locations mentioned on the marriage cert, and Griffiths :

The bride's address in the townland of Kilscanlan is about 12km to the east of New Ross and just to the south of he present main road to Rosslare/Wexford; see : google map New Ross to Kilscanlan  (The 'A' marker on the map shows the location)

see also on the first edition (1820/40s) OSI Map : Kilscanlan  (click historic or historic bw option)

The Griffith's  address at Windmill lane is a short walk ( less than 1km) from the quays in New Ross Town.  see Windmill Lane, New Ross
