1911 address in Ormskirk
« on: Thursday 22 April 10 13:41 BST (UK) »
In 1911 (STAIT transcribed as START)  Annie STAIT (wife) is listed as a lodging house manageress, with her family and 11 lodgers at "Court of Church Street, Ormskirk"

does anyone with local history knowledge know of a lodging house in that area, at that time?

many thanks!

 :)

I wonder if your address should be "Court off Church Street ..."  :-\

I would imagine so.  :)

However this still doesn't really answer your original question.  ;)

Just out of interest, this slightly zoomable map shows Church Street but not enough detail to show courts:

Church St is on the left about half way up the map and is the street at an angle of approx 10 o'clock.

Sadly a lot of the old courtyards in Ormskirk have fallen victim to 'development', but there have been a few which were saved and have since been done up - there is one which leads through to Church Street and could be the one! Though your best bet is to contact the local family history society, who might be able to help about which may have contained lodging houses.

There is a pub that used to be called Disraelis (it might still be) and that was in a huge building that could likely have been lodgings.

11 lodgers and a family could have squeezed into quite a small dwelling in those days when people didn't expect or get large rooms or privacy. On the 1911 census did it say how many rooms were in the house? This may give an indication it's size.

Did Annie have a similar occupation in previous censuses? Did she live at the same address as in 1911?
