Hi All,

This is a long shot but I am trying to find more info about John francis O'mara- Raf segeant Romford Essex and father Andrew, retired police sergeant at time of John's marriage in 1947.

I would be gratefull of any info.. here's what I know

John Francis O'mara born approx 1917 not sure where.
Marriage 1947 Romford Essex to Olive B Halliwell at 30yrs old
Dies 1954 Bolton Lancashire, England
Possible Irish connection (heard from family/seems v.likely) that's all I know.

It's going to be difficult to locate John without details on where he was from in Ireland.

His father's name and occupation could help locate him on our 1911 census, which might give you a possible place of birth for John.

You could try searching the civil index for his birth, but there are quite a number of possible matches. Note that the surname if often spelt as O'Meara also.

Thanks for your help... the surname is spelt O'mara on certificates could it be still spelt O'meara?

Yes I have nothing but the father's name to confirm I am on the right John, so it will be tricky.

Another update...

There's a possible match for his birth on the Civil Index in the right year and with his full name... Middle are not often included  in registrations, so you might be in luck :

 Name: John Francis O'Meara
 Registration District: Borrisokane
 Event Type: Birth
 Quarter and Year: Jan - Mar 1917
 Volume Number: 3 / Page Number: 299

The registration district of Borrisokane is in Co. Tipperary

I presume you mean on English certificates ?

I wouldn't worry about a small difference in spelling like this .. names were often recorded with variations like this due to various reasons - especially when people with Irish names moved away from home.

O'Meara is the more common spelling of the surname in Ireland

.. hope that turn out to be the right John Francis.. certainly worth trying to see

I've just looked up the details of the surname O'Meara/O'Mara and it originates in the Tipperary area. The town of Toomevara (Thuaim Uí Mheára in Irish) in the county is apparently named after the O'Meara sept (an ancient family).
