Jane Scott Bett *COMPLETED*
« on: Friday 30 April 10 06:30 BST (UK) »
Hi There

I have a Jane (Jean) Scott Bett who I just cannot find after 1952, last address 51 Surrey Street, Auckland.

The information I have.

Jane was born 23rd May 1902 in Kinross, Scotland. On her sister Helen Smith Bett's probate it states Jane as a spinister. Helen died in 14 March 1952 . On the Funderal Directors record, there is an obituary that states Helen is an aunty to a named girl (possibly living). I don't know if the obituary is from the Auckland Star or Herald but apparently there are 2. The child maybe Jane's or another member of the family.

Using variants for Bett-Betts , Beat, Beats and Beattie, I have looked at the following

Microfiche for deaths from 1952 till recent and also on the microfiche for marriages from 1943 (on my great Grandfathers probate in 1943 it states both Jane and Helen as spinisters).

Also incoming Uk passenger lists, online Auckland cemeteries and also some additional NZ cemeteries in Northland.
Some one has looked on the latest NZSG for me and nothing was found.

I'm not aware of any other siblings of Jane's coming out to New Zealand.

Regards

lil

Hi lil

Mmm ... so frustrating, as you've gone to such great lengths already, to find her.

Just a thought ... is it possible she may have moved "across the ditch" ?

I mention it because I see at "findmypast" what appears to be Jane's arrival in NZ (1927 to Wellington) and another record for "a Helen S. BETT - b. 1902" (1924 - UK to Melbourne).   Might there have been family in say, Melbourne, that Helen visited before coming on to NZ ?  And could Jane have moved there following her sister's death ?

Lil,

From memory the death notice was from the Herald.

Hi Lucy

Thanks for your reply and excellent work.  You may well be onto somehing :)

I never found a passenger list for Helen to NZ, never thought to check Australia. Looking on 'findmypast" I see there is a record for David Bett b 1896 London to Melbourne in 1920. Jane and Helen have a brother David b 1897. The have other siblings but nothing coming up for Melbourne.

I shall investigate David further and Jane in Melbourne.

KHP -watching my back as usual ;D You know my gene housing keeping is shocking.

Thanks
