Ethel was born 11th July 1886 and the address on her birth certificate says Kent Lane, Church Coppenhall.  As there is no father named I assume she was illegitimate and wonder if she was born in the workhouse and if there are records for 1886 available.
Her mother was Louisa Jane Cook(E).
Any ideas?

Were there industrial schools in the Nantwich area where a small child may have been sent?

Haven't been able to find Ethel, but there was a Louisa Jane Cook who married a John Whittingham in Sept qtr 1890 Nantwich 8a 596. They are on the 1891 census with a two year old child-a girl, but she isn't called Ethel.
regards.

Thanks Paco, I have that and believe this is Ethel's mother.  But with a new husband and family.  Ethel was probably taken in by relatives or put in a home.  How I will ever find out is doubtful!
Cheers,

Hello Sarah,
I have had a look at that and do think it quite possible.  But where do I start to look for records between 1886 and 1901 when she appears to be a domestic servant aged 13!
I have an illegitimate Great Grandmother in my family and was able to purchase the Overseers records for Hungerford Union and found her and the father there.  I wonder if there is such a thing for Nantwich and where do I look?
Thank you for your interest,
Abiam2

Hi, Abiam2, the surviving records of the Nantwich Union (Board of Governors) are held at the Cheshire Archives.  I had a quick look at the catalogue and there does not appear to be much to help for the time period you are looking for.  I still suggest you look yourself and see if you can find anything.
Regards
Kathb

Thanks Kathb,
Why is it my dates are always outside what 'they' have? ::)
Thank you for looking.  Someone has just given me access to their tree on Ancestry so I am hoping there will be some clues,
Cheers,
Abiam2
