Help please Immigration/Work Papers
« on: Monday 10 May 10 10:53 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I hope someone may be able to help a newbie please?
I have tried the Archives at Kew, but I'm getting confused and nowhere.
My challenge:
I am trying to trace my late mother's footsteps.  She was born in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland and came to this country in April 1955.  I have some details from the Swiss Embassy but it doesn't help me that much.  I have recently found that she worked at the Hotel Bristol and Hotel Kreuz in Bern 1950-1955.  Is there any way of getting informaton about work papers or employment?  Where and how do I go about getting hold of Census returns?

Any info gratefully received.

Thanks

Hello,
I don't think you will find any census data for Switzerland.
Why don't you try a letter to both hotels?  You never know, they may have some old records in a dusty attic, or be able to refer you somewhere that does!  Certainly they will be able to respond to a letter in English, as both are city international hotels.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on.
