South Australian Passenger Lists December 1885, please help
« on: Tuesday 11 May 10 08:46 BST (UK) »
My question is - are there any records of ships from London arriving in Adelaide in early December 1885?
My PHILLIPS family arrived in Sydney on 25 Dec 1885 on the S S Cheviot - the shipping list notes that they were from Adelaide and there are other passengers on the Cheviot from Melbourne. SS Cheviot was previously in Sydney earlier that month (4 Dec 1885) and was registered in Melbourne to Wm. Howard Smith & Sons for use in the inter-colonial passenger and coal-carrying trade.

I know my family was in London when their youngest child Grace was born on 21 June 1885 and I have a family photo which was said to be taken in West Ham London in September 1885, probably shortly the family sailed to Adelaide. The family are -
Henry Herbert Phillips, aged 34
wife Charlotte Ellen aged 33
          and children
Kate    aged 11   (also known as Greenwood)
Amy aged 8
Sidney aged 5
Albert aged 2
Grace aged 6 months   (not mentioned on Cheviot list).
The Index to the Official Assisted Passage Passenger Lists which runs from 1847-1886 GRG 35/48/1 has been searched. Any help would be much appreciated.
Phillips in South Barrow, Somerset, Greenwood in Lambeth
Mitchell in Londonderry, McFarland in Drumneechy
Bale in Barnstaple, Devon and Richmond, Melbourne
