« on: Tuesday 11 May 10 13:44 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me discover which regiment he would have been and about his billeting to Malta and Quebec

1851 HO  107  2169 19 1
Living at home with parents and 3 brothers.  Hall of Thaw Church Coppenhall

1861 RG 9  691  157  6
A Private in the army stationed at Winchester St Thomas.  Aged 19 and single.

1871 census Quebec Centre St Louis Division No3
Charles Cook 29   Anglesterre Anglican Anglaise Militerre Married

Also on that census are wife Elizabeth and Daughter Louisa Jane
Elizabeth Cook 31 Angleterre Anglican Anglaise Married
Louisa Cook 2 Q Anglican Anglaise

From the Army Chaplains Indices:
Louisa Cook born 1868-70 Malta
Also a brother:
Quebec, Canada birth reg for Charles jnr in GRO Army Chaplains Birth Indices Charles R Cook Quebec 1870 - 1872 page 581

I can find no sign of Charles sen or his wife Elizabeth in 1881. I don't know if Elizabeth was English or Canadian!
Louisa is a domestic servant and Charles is living with an aunt and uncle in 1881 but no sign of the parents.
R. Chatters have been helping and here is the link to what has gone before

A few days ago Findmypast put surviving records online for men discharged 1873 to 1882. There are about eight Charles Cooks listed but unfortunately they do not give the place and year of birth. If you do not have a subscription it could be expensive searching them all to see if his records are there.

Winchester was home to the Rifle Brigade and the Kings Royal Rifle Corps, and other regiments may have passed through. Both the RB and KRRC had four battalions each, but only the 1st Battalion of the KRRC were in Canada in 1871.

The 1st Bn KRRC were also in Malta - March 1866 to Sept 1867.

btw... the KRRC may be in the regimental BMDs as 60th Foot or 60th Rifles.

Unfortunately he is not on FindMyPast, wrong dates.  But the ist Battalion of the KRRC looks useful for both Malta and Canada.
