Hi Akira

Hmm having just had a quick look at both 1841 & 1851 censuses I see your problem he's nowhere to be found!
How do you know he was born in Somerset?  Have you found him in the emigration lists to NSW?
What else do you know that could give any more clues?  Do you have his marriage certificate?

Hi SS,

Alfred R Simpson born 1836 Somerset, England according to his death certificate died 1863 aged 27 Sussex st Sydney, married Hannah Guyton 1860 Shoalhaven they had one son also an Alfred R Simpson born 1864 Broulee.

No parents mentioned on his death nor marriage certificates

His marriage cert also lists somerset as his place of birth

I haven't found in either NSW, QLD & VIC an Alfred Richard Simpson that has immigrated under assisted or unassisted indexes.

Hope this helps further

Cheers

Akira

Hi again Akira

It seems you do have a brick wall with no parents mentioned on the certificates you have!

So many Q's -
Did he come to Australia with or without his parents and at what age?  Was he a sailor and jumped ship?
Has the spelling of his surname altered between the two countries?  Was he born in a neighbouring county but grew up in Somerset?

Can anyone else offer any more suggestions?

Sorry I can't be of any more help.  SS

Hello Akira

Found one entry on the 1841 which might be him.

London Street, Andover, Hampshire.

Robert SIMPSON, age 25. Occupation - Road Contractor.
Ann (wife), age 20.
Alfred (son), age 5.
Ellen (daughter), age 2.
All not born in county.

Can't find any of them in 1851.

Hope this helps.

Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your reply

looks like it could be it but the ages look odd

as Ann would have been 15 when alfred was born

I've had a look and haven't found a marriage reference for them either

Can't find them on the 1851 census either I'm not having much luck with them

Cheers

Akira

Hi Akira,

Don't forget that ages on the 1841 census for those over 15, were rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5, so Ann could have been anything up to 24 years of age.  That makes it highly probable.

Best wishes,
Elizabeth
