George Bohill
« on: Saturday 15 May 10 22:35 BST (UK) »
George Bohill played football for Bedlington in 1912.
I have his birthplace as North Delaval.
Is there a district called North Delaval in Northumberland?
The nearest birth registrations I have are George Bohill b.Newcastle S1889
and George Bohills b.Tynemouth D1890.
Thanks

 Z,

Seaton Delaval community was the "seat" of the Delaval family ( came over with the Conqueror- 1066 and all that ! )

New Delaval was/is a south-wesatern suburb of the town of Blyth.

Births Marriages and Deaths in these two places would have been registered and recorded within the Tynemouth Registration District (these was a sub-district office in Blyth)

Although Bedlington is only about 4/5 miles north of Blyth ( on other side of River Blyth) BMD there would have been registered under the Morpeth Registration District.

Newcastle RD covered mainly the City of Newcastle.

I am a native of the area, but I have never heard of North Delaval. If your source for " North Delaval" is a census, is it possible that census enumerator recorded the "Where Born" column as " Northld Delaval", Northd, Northld etc been abbreviations of the day for the county Northumberland?

I'm wondering whether it was New Delaval.  Same parish as Seaton Delaval but closer to Bedlington parish church than to Earsdon

Saying he played for "Bedlington" does not give much away !. There were several football teams in Bedlington in the era but all would have a name longer than just Bedlington. e.g. Bedlington Station, Bedlington East End, etc.

Bedlington Mechanics were probably the top team in the era in the Bedlington area. Unfortunately they folded in mid 1900s.  The premier Bedlington team of today is the Bedlington Terriers, not formed until 1949

( I saw them them lose to Tiverton at Wembley in 1999 in the FA Vase- a competition for minor teams.)

Bedlington fans chant for their team was "Terriers Woof Woof" ( and while I am on the topic of chants, County Down rugby team fans chant " Up Down Up Down"
