Another PR puzzle
« on: Monday 17 May 10 22:04 BST (UK) »
After the prompt help I had with my last request, can you lovely people help with this one. The child is illegitimate; 'supposed father J Curtis', followed by a note 'a bastard', but can anyone read what it says above that? Thanks.

I think it says something like 'was bapt'.  Certainly the last word looks like Bapt. and these records often end that way.  Do the others on the page?

The other entries on the page just say 'X son/daughter of Y and wife Z'. It does look as if it might be a name, but it's certainly not the vicar; his name was Simon Cowper.

Could it be m Boyd, maybe meaning that the person married a person with the surname Boyd at a later date?

I'm not sure if I can see a W there - making Wm Boyd? Or maybe Mr Boyd?  There seem to be too many lines for just an M but I can't quite make it out.

Thank you all for your help. It's part of my FreeReg transcription. I usually like to include any comment in the 'Notes' but I think 'a bastard' is all they're going to get. Luckily the names are legible.
Thanks again.

As a transcriber I would agree - better to omit than mislead.

It doesn't look as if it's going to affect the basic data anyway.
