Van Diemen's Land Records of Convict Elizabeth STUDHAM
« on: Wednesday 19 May 10 22:42 BST (UK) »
Hello. I am hoping someone can help me. I am trying to trace my 3xGreat Aunt Elizabeth Studham b. Monkton Kent 1810 who was convicted of burning down the Poor House in Birchington Kent UK - during the Swing Riots sentenced to death - sentence commuted to transportation.

She sailed from Woolwich UK on the prison ship Mary111 on 11th June 1831 and arrived in Hobart Van Diemen's Land on 19th October 1831.

She went to Cascades Female Factory .

She made 4 applications to marry the last being to Joseph King and apparently they actually married on 24th. July 1843 ( not confirmed by certificate)

Thereafter I can find no trace of her except for a Ticket of Leave notification on 20th October 1843 in her maiden name, which is why I wonder about her marriage actually taking place, or did Tickets of Leave have to be requested in the name of arrival in Van Demien's Land regardless of marriage?

Which would be the best way to try and trace her after 1843.

Thanks very much.

Yes, TOL's were issued in their name of arrival/conviction.

Convicts who had a death sentence commuted were usually transported for life, as was Elizabeth.  Her conduct record shows that she received a conditional pardon in 1846.  Her pardon states that she received it because she had no charges against her since 1843. (HO 10/59 page 480/481)

Thank you very much Merlin and Debra for the information.

Could I ask where I look to see the BMD records, it would be lovely to think her life turned around and that she had a Son and Daughter but the birth dates seem slightly odd based on her  marriage date and the names are also slightly wrong. Do I have to purchase the certs. in order to check the records are the right children for my Elizabeth Studham as here in the UK or can certs. be viewed on line?

Also I am wondering about the possible death mentioned in Emu Bay, I looked Emu Bay up and it seems to be now called Burnie, is there an area still called Emu Bay that is separate from Burnie?

I really am most grateful for all the help being offered as I try  to understand the records system in Tasmania, being fairly new to this it's a steep learning curve just on the UK part of my family, the patience and help from fantastic Rootschatters has been amazing.

Thanks again.

Betsy King left a will.
If this is her, she left her estate to be split between Emma Gendle and Harriet Buckingham, no mention that I can see of children.
