CHICK Milverton
« on: Friday 21 May 10 14:07 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Trying to find out more about my Somerset roots. 2nd Great Grandfather Chales Chick apparently born in Milverton in 1828 married Mary Smyth of Sallins, County Kildare and moved to Edgebaston Warwickshire in 1862. His parents are eluding me at the moment. There seem to be a couple of Charles Chicks about, none of which fit all that well. Got the 51,61 and 71 census.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks
Mark

Stan thanks for the work. I agree this looks like the man, however on Familysearch.org there is a record posted by David Cheek lisitng a Charles Chick with parents James and Mary Burston with birth 5 Dec 1829 but in all other respects the notes are different. My Charles married Mary Smyth, the other Mary Tucker. Mine married in 1857 in Wilton, the other 1853 in Milverton. Some residences in Stogumber are the same but mine moves to Edgebaston of which I am certain. I'm going to go with your suggestion I think.

Hi Mark,

Do you have the marriage cert? If not you will need it for fathers name. I am not convinced James and Mary were his parents. There are certainly 2 Charles CHICK's appearing in the census both claiming a birth in Milverton.

1861 provides your Charles listed as aged 32 b Milverton a coachman with Mary Jane 25 b Ireland and son John Bernard aged 2. They are in Weston Super Mare.

I also see Charles CHICK aged 31 b Milverton a farm Lab and his wife Mary and three children living in Huish Episcopi (oldest child 7 so a perfect match for the 1853 marriage.)

Moving on to 1871 I see your Charles and family in Edgbaston (aged 43 - a gardener) The other family are still in Huish (He is aged 41)

Dropping back to 1851 we have Charles CHICK aged 24 b Milverton a servant in Stogumber. We also have Charles CHICK aged 21 a farmyard Lab living in Milverton with his parents James and Mary.

As Charles CHICK = Mary TUCKER in Milverton in 1853 I am inclined to think this is the son of James and Mary

1841 we have James and Mary with family including son Charles aged 10 in Milverton. There is a 15 year old servant in Kingston may be the second one.

Looking at the Milverton site there is another Charles. Seems a little early given the census records after marriage for your Charles, but, he is a bit younger than his wife so may have dropped a few years. He is the only other one I am spotting in Milverton.

Charles CHEECK 31 Mar 1823 mother Maria (base Born father WESTLAKE.) Looks like Maria may have married John BARNES in 1828. She was of Halse. There is a John Barnes and his children in 1841 in Halse, looks like Maria may have died by then. Maria BARNS buried at Halse 11 Feb 1840 aged 35 years. Maria CHICK was baptised 8 Sep 1805 Halse parents Robert and Mary (born 18 Aug 1805)

Much more information on these family

Hope the marriage cert helps.

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Kris

Thanks so much for your interest. I am certain of the Charles Chick in Edgebaston. He is mine. He married Mary Ann Smyth in 1857. Her father was Samuel Smyth, a policeman. On the marriage cert Charles has not listed a father.....I have assumed the 15 year old servant then is my Charles. In 1851 he is a servant in the house of the Curate of Stogumber. The Curate, a Mr P Otto Trevelyne signed the marriage certificate. 1861 Charles is in Weston-Super-Mare as a coachman.
My Charles was 30 years old, born in 1827 according to his marriage cert. His wife was 22.
I think we have the answer given Charles had no father on this marriage cert!
