What does he give as his father's name on the marriage certificate? Just wondering if it fits with what we have.

The timing between him being sentenced to four months in September 1884 and marrying Ellen in 1885 looks about right; perhaps he thought after getting out of prison that it might be good to have a change of scenery.

 - D. W. Battern headed to Canada in 1908.

 - if this is him, he describes himself as a returned Canadian.

He does appear to have also served in WWI in Canada - do you have those records?

(I wonder if his father went to Canada, hence the link?)

No, I'm afraid I didn't get it. Sometimes there might be a server error and messages are lost. :(

ETA: never mind, it just appeared now!

Arthur Horsley Brunel Stevens is my second great uncle. Unfortunately I don't know anything much about him. He was one of 8 or son children of one George Stevens who made his way to South Africa from Rochester, Kent. He was born circa 1859. Two people with such ridiculous names deserved each other! He was born in Cape Town and at some stage was in the then Salisbury Southern Rhodesia. A family tale exists of him being a "Rhodes man",  and having been involved in negotiations with Lobengula, the Matabele chief in Bulawayo. But this is apocryphal.

A quick follow up on Arthur Horsley Brunel Stevens. I've located a death notice for him from a mental hospital in Bulawayo,Zimbabwe from 1944.
