Breckels Essex and New Zealand
« on: Wednesday 26 May 10 06:11 BST (UK) »
I have 2 chilldren; John Harvey Christopher Beckels b 1886 Kaikoura NZ, and Basil Rochester Breckels b 1887 Kaikoura, NZ. I am looking for marriages for them. In 1901 census they were living in Kensington (something) East Ham, with Parents Henry and Sarah, and sister Kate. I have found a marriage for her but nothing for the boys.
Can anyone help?

Hi,

Basil R Breckels married Ethel H Johnston in 1915 in Romford, Essex.

Can not see anything for John Harvey Christopher Breckels.

Thanks Sharon
Henry Rochester is my mystery man at present - he was born in London, Married in NZ aged about 20 (he was father of John Harvey and Basil Rochester) the family was back in UK by 1894, and to my knowledge so far, died there. I think he went by his self, the rest of the family seem to have been in London all the time, but why did he go? I am still trying to find his arrival in NZ. Thanks for marriage for Basil. Maybe John went back to NZ?? This is an annoying one.

Henry Rochester Breckels was a witness to his sister Caroline's marriage in 1857 so went to NZ between then and his marriage to Sarah Marella Clemett 5 July 1884 in his father-in-law's house in Kaikoura. They & three children back to UK in 1894 arriving 7 May on ship "Maypole". She died Brighton 1  May 1928, will says they separated by deed 19 May 1907.  He had two daughters (that I know of)  by Edith Emily Halls 1903 & 1908, they married 26 May 1928, He died 23 Nov 1938, Edith in June 1965, buried together Shepiston Lane Cemy, Hayes (near Heathrow airport).
By first marriage had three children,  all in Kaikoura. John Henry Christopher Breckels (14 Apl 1885 - ?), Basil Rochester Breckels (22 Mar 1887 - 14 Feb 1923) and Kate Prudence Breckels (20 Oct 1889 - ?). Kate married John Whyte 26 Jan 1918, St Johns, Great Ilford, Essex, four sons that I know of.
Basil Rochester married Ethel Hebe Johnston 30 May 1915  St Albans, Great Ilford. Three sons (deceased) four grandsons & 6 great grandchildren (living).
John Henry Christopher Breckels is the puzzle. He went to sea in the Royal Navy on "Impregnable" 9 Sep 1901, signed on for 12 years 14 April 1903, but on 6 Mar 1907 jumped ship from the "Prometheus" in Sydney. Indexes suggest he married an Ada Inman in NSW but I don't have the certificate.
Hope this helps. More info gratefully received.

I mentioned the following in another post of Jan's a few months ago about Henry Rochester BRECKELS.

An aunt of mine met an English man here in NZ in 1990, whose mother was a Breckels born in Kaikoura, and whose father was Henry Rochester. She got me to get HRB and Sarah CLEMETT's marriage cert for him. My aunt said she kept in touch with him for a while but then lost contact.

Going on the info posted by Millrhynd the English chap would have been one of the WHYTE boys.

Hello millrhyn
I am confused I have Caroline born in 1858 and Henry Rochester born in 1863 - obviously if he was at her wedding in 1857 I have the wrong dates. I also have them arriving in Plymouth in 1894 aboard Doric, via Melbourne, Colombia and India.

John Breckels (20 Aug 1870 - 31 May 1958) was a younger brother to Henry Rochester Breckels. John had five daughters - the youngest died 8 April 2009.  Grandchildren still living. Caroline Breckels was their elder sister, 10 Oct 1857 to 22 Dec 1921. (these dates are from a Bible held by the descendants of John, I have not seen the certificates). Caroline married George Austin 29 July 1879 - St Saviour Parish Church, Walthamstow. There seems to lie the confusion.
